Thank you, John and Graeme and everyone at 8-4 for all your hard work on this Japanese release!

The PLAY FOREVER screen from UFO 50 in Japanese
UFO 50 hits Japan today! This was a pretty huge undertaking given there were several dozen games to localize but the team did an amazing job and the Japanese version looks awesome. Big 💙 to @mossmouth.bsky.social and @perryjon.bsky.social and everyone who worked to make the JP release a reality!
DONE
大変お待たせしました。日本語版『UFO 50』のSteam、Nintendo Switch向け配信日が4月16日に決定しました。どうぞお楽しみに!
(The Japanese version of UFO 50 will be coming out on Steam and Nintendo Switch on April 16th!)
The Calvin's dad explaining records meme. He is explaining that the two kinds of meme are Calvin's dad and Loss. Despite being a meme about Calvin's dad, this one is Loss.
I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines.
Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."
anyway, if you're building a pipeline for narrative, include room for line by line notes for 3rd parties like loc and VO, encourage your team to mark up their lines as they go for stuff like idioms, sarcasm, rhetorical questions, and other quirks of language since those are SO impacted by language
Oh here’s a good one:

A pretty good initial breakdown for varied frequency of events that feel genuinely common / uncommon / rare / very rare / epic / legendary. Start here and then nudge around.
would love to see a thread of small practical pieces of advice developers just starting out or unfamiliar with a genre might not know!
I’ll start: if you’re using a tag-based system, don’t just give everything an individual tag—look for thematic groups where similar events can lead to same outcome
I'm sorry but if you have 4,000 employees and your revenue is 6 billion, you make 1.5 million per employee and if you can't make a profit margin there, you are simply embezzling it.
They were trying and failing to get people to subscribe at $20/mo and each 60 second video was costing the company $15-18 in costs to make.
That’s it, everybody, right there. That’s the Economics of AI. Visionary stuff.
oh my god this is extremely funny
But like, seriously sir, that means you reckoned with it, you understood the consequences, understood what it meant to people you care about, understood that it was unethical, and then went ahead and did it anyway. You don't get a medal for "imaginary courage."
In an incredible coincidence, I actually got one of these *today.* I'd been looking for a thumb brace that wouldn't prevent gaming when I happened to see @nicoleclark.bsky.social's post about it a while back.
This really sounds like my kind of thing. Definitely going to check this out.
If Sinners came out in the 90s there would be an SNES and Genesis game that would be made by totally different developers. The Genesis version youd play as Smoke and you’d have a gun and in the SNES version you play as Preacherboy and you fight vampires with your guitar
I guess f*** the artists who worked hard on making the environments dark and moody, and the very conscious decision to have Grace look like a nerd who doesn't wear makeup and is a sweaty mess because she's in a f***ing horror game.
Well shit. Maybe I should be playing Marathon…

I don’t want to be a pest but just in case you’re not aware, there’s a Japanese games magazine called CONTINUE with a somewhat similar bent. Not sure if this would pose a legal problem, but it does seem like a branding/SEO concern 😕
Seems like a great magazine! You might need to rethink the title though, as there’s already a CONTINUE magazine in Japan (which is also video games and related nerd culture with a higher editorial benchmark than, say, Famitsu).

I don't think live games are the problem, honestly. I think the problem is investor and managerial insanity, where the people making those high-level decisions don't understand the business they're in and keep changing their mind about the risk profile of their business plan
Shipping costs ranging from 18.66 USD for “mail” (23-25 business days) through 48.29 USD for “express shipping” (10-12 business days)
Shipping to Japan costs more than the book 😭
The Hitman games, and especially the World of Assassination trilogy, come immediately to mind.
I don't know what game this is, but importing the Space Marine 2 character models into it was genius.
I do think habitual chatbot usage is kind of like smoking; there's a range of outcomes, and we very clearly see the worst ones (psychosis, delusions, addiction) but they're all negative. thousands with the cognitive equivalent of being out of breath after one flight of stairs.
holy shit. hell of an analysis
if you asked me to diagnose the western game industry's current problem it would start with "landlords have absorbed basically all disposable income"
I know it's meant in good faith but "if we just made smaller scope games and charged 20-40 dollars for them it would fix the industry" is very funny to me. indies release like 20 of those a week on steam. are you buying them? is the industry fixed? no? hm. sounds like you need a different solution
