Maybe after HBO announced that horrible "what if the Civil War ended differently and we still had slavery" miniseries in 2020 everyone realized we had enough civil war movies.

The presentations were all over the place. Mostly battles, but they'd also read diaries to see what people were eating on the battlefields, what the western states were doing during the war, "how we could have won this battle" was always funny. Idk. I think they just liked history.

Hmmm. Some were retired history teachers, so maybe just a way to "live" history. Some had family in the war (we had a man who was a descendent of one of the all-Black volunteer units present, that was interesting), so maybe trying to understand their roots.

Every few months or so, I'll get an email from the listserv letting me know a Civil Warrior has died. All this to say that I think your theory is true. We're losing all our reenactors.

When I lived in LA, I went to a monthly "Civil Warriors" meeting for two years at a local Jewish deli. (LA was a weird time for me.) We'd eat sandwiches and old men would give presentations about various battles. I held an Abraham Lincoln life mask after eating a pastrami sandwich one day.
