Black-and-white photo of seven uniformed soldiers seated closely together on the floor inside a metal-walled interior, wearing helmets and military gear. In the foreground sits Sgt. Gander, a large black dog facing the camera with a collar visible. On April 15, 1935, Sgt. Gander was born in Newfoundland.
He eventually became the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada and went with them to Hong Kong.
At the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, he gave his life to save his comrades and died a hero.
