Great article by @tomrocksmaths.bsky.social. Getting to the top levels in maths is possible for all groups and backgrounds, but it is currently harder for some people than others. Hence why equity in maths education at all prior attainment levels is so important @meimaths.bsky.social

Yes this is the important thing. And it will be hard to get right, but I don’t think it’s impossible.
Being a senior leader at work and a lone parent at home is a joy. But it is also hard. Resisting the urge to try and be a ‘superwoman’ and do it all is hardest of all.
Thank-you to the group of inspirational women at the @teachfirst.bsky.social women leadership event for the cup refill #IWD26
Article reads: Woman named as Archbishop of Canterbury in historic first The 63-year-old archbishop-designate is married to Eamonn Mullally, with whom she has two children. Originally from Woking in Surrey, she was the UK's chief nursing officer from 1999 to 2004.
This article manages to name her husband before it names… her.

Protect!
I’m proud to work in the third sector. Lots of charities do amazing things. But some charities use their status to propagate dangerous and illegal ideals. Let’s project women and girls from this.
Nah, that would have been ParentPay Flaps alert or something
The parent newsletter of my son's school today warned against unsolicited psychologists...

Great for UCAS/job apps
Must pay it a visit!
If I have missed something further south I’m sure @learningmaths.bsky.social will correct me
I’ve visited @kielderobservatory.bsky.social and @herstmonceuxobs.bsky.social this summer. Have I been to the most northern and most southern observatories in England?
It’s a pleasure as always to be at @herstmonceuxobs.bsky.social astronomy festival. Surrounded by inspiring people and surroundings.
Day 1 of my new role at @meimaths.bsky.social. Have just been made a ‘enjoy your first day’ breakfast by #boy2. Nothing better to kick off a new job than coffee, lemon drizzle cake, chocolate and a brioche. To be eaten with a spoon.
The rich collaboration went 'further' than sharing resources and included digital role models and cross-partner events.
Do have a read of the final impact report:
static1.squarespace.com/static/67bdb...
The activity was diverse: from virtual labs and STEM trucks to TikTok videos and alumni-led workshops, reflecting the diversity of the young people the partners aimed to reach. Importantly, 74% of young people reported more positive attitudes toward physics after engaging with the programme.
Outside of my day job I was very pleased to be asked to be involved in evaluating the hashtag#PlanetPossibility consortium of grassroots charities, universities, and education partners across the UK. Over three years this consortium reached nearly 95,000 people.
Beyond excited to be at @kielderobservatory.bsky.social. Pray for some cloud breaks!
A map showing South West England and Wales, labelled "Graph of British Rivers". Two river courses are shown, labelled 'Wye axis' and 'Exe axis'. Does anyone read these descriptions, or am I wasting my time?

Thanks. I am very much allowed to keep connections with the EEF trials as they get going!
It was also great to meet and speak to other MEI colleagues about future plans and I am looking forward to getting started. Meeting my new colleagues at a conference was a great was to see the rich vein of expertise permeating MEI.
#SarahHart keynote made me wonder how many Booker Prize winning novels have a mathematical twist, and during @susannemallett.bsky.social on supporting out-of-field maths teachers played with double sided counters AND talked Secondary Non-specialists EEF trial www.ncetm.org.uk/maths-hubs/a... 3/n
@eltimbre.bsky.social and #RebeccaAtherfold on using Oak resources in Post-16, @tombutton.bsky.social on legacy and future of MEI's data science and AI programmes, and #RosieBenton, #CatherineBerry and #AndyLumley on the new Integral PowerPoints highlighted agility of this wonderful charity. 2/n
@meimaths.bsky.social conference 2025 extra special since I will be joining the organisation at their first Chief Learning Officer in September.
Leaving NCETM will be hard but evaluation is in VERY capable hands and that the two organisations are linked by shared vision and partnership working. 1/n
Join us in contributing to a nationally-important initiative with the potential to make a real positive difference to students' maths learning and the maths teaching profession.

All out-of-field maths teachers will receive
- fully-funded high quality PD in either 2025/26 or 2026/27
- £500 or £1000 for each school as an incentive
- Regular updates and communications from the team. (3/n)
We have had generous funding from @theeef.bsky.social for a national RCT evaluation and the expert evaluators @sheffieldhallamuni.bsky.social on board to conduct it. @ncetm.bsky.social, #MathsHubs and #Etio need secondary schools and Multi-Academy Trusts on board as research participants. (2/n)
Over the last couple of months I have been watching
- Expertly designed and led PD
- With out-of-field maths teachers 'growing' their identity as mathematician,
- Become even better at teaching students who need maths teachers the most.
So important that these programmes externally evaluated. (1/n)
