- give more effective compliments
- distinguish bad quality vs just being not to your taste
- more quickly find things you do like

As someone formally trained in literary criticism, and as a writer myself, I have both seen and experienced this. The descent into the smug, slack-jawed gratification of armchair critique is easy. Doing the work isn't.

Opinions are free. The damage they do when made in bad faith publicly is not.
