There's also this assumption that "everyone hates clowns" which IS NOT TRUE. It means that the clown could be replaced with ANYTHING. This is just a generic slasher film! I think the only evil clown I've ever seen that actually felt like a clown was Funnyman, which uses UK clowning tropes!
USA not having any clown tradition in earnest anymore is kind of why "evil clown" movies are kind of nothing-movies. They're only drawing on previous evil clown movies, not on anything else. You're subverting something that doesn't exist in this culture, so it's not a subversion at all.
