A Day Of Mourning.
After the rally we marched to Yabun and there was an indigenous dance troupe from North America that performed. It was a really special coincidence. The dancers spoke of how just a few years ago they could be jailed for their performance.
It’s the same in the US too. Ongoing and bloody.
Hearing folks at the Invasion Day rally speak about their experiences and those of their community drives home how much safer and more welcomed I am than First Nations folks here.
The immigration process was really invasive and pretty humiliating but I fully understand I had it easy.
Of course my very position is the result of colonial oppression. When I came here to Oz I was so desperate to reunite with my partner (the borders had shut). I am forever grateful for the people that let me in and allowed me to stay legally. But the only reason I got in was because of my background
The whole time I did my visa application here I kept feeling like I was asking permission for admittance from people who stole the land and not from the traditional custodians of the land I’m trying to live on.
This is my fourth Invasion Day since I’ve moved, my third one on Gadigal land. Land back worldwide.

Check out these gorgeous grevilleas just growing in the TAFE parking lot on my way to work. I reckon this is pretty ordinary stuff for folks from here in Oz. For me it’s like seeing a celebrity. Coming from LA where that’s common but still exciting I instinctively try keep my cool as I walk past.
