My erosion filter is out! Video, blog post, and shader source.
It emulates erosion without simulation, so it's fast, GPU friendly, and trivial to generate in chunks.

kept working on the 2.5D smoke thingy, it works by raymarching a 2D fluidsim and achieves interactive framerate on mobile (45-60fps) by reducing some settings.
it"s quite limited but allows some cool variations. video captured on a (5 year old) iPhone12 mini.
demo soon ™
Last week, I flew to GDC in San Francisco to show The Last Night in private thanks to @elbowgreasegames.bsky.social...

It turns out that basic economics 101 works after all and if you build more housing, housing prices drop. You don't need rent control, you don't need minimum affordable housing ratios, you don't need more regulations, you just need to build more housing.

Of course it is!
Truly.
Alberto Mielgo finds a previously hidden middle ground between abstract, exaggerated, explosive, and expressionistic stylization, and a harsh, immediate, realistic depiction of our reality. Unique. Unmistakable. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest artists of our time.

Kino watching Flow.
The blue channel was originally just to add silt being kicked up but ended up used for more general long-lasting interations. It's used to carve out a path in the surface debris and the normal derived from this channel allows us to push the UVs apart a bit so it feels like you're moving it around.
Then terrorism wins. That's what they want. To enforce their moral order by strking fear in our hearts. What we should do is exactly the contrary. Speak up. If we all speak, we are safer.
I wish more game studios realized that asset fidelity, where most of development budget goes today, is way less important than framing, lighting & atmosphere.
Lo-fi assets + hi-fi cinematography is going to be a key style in the coming years.

lo-fi asset + hi-fi rendering
- looks amazing
- 10x cheaper to produce
- much more performant
- not limited to pixel art
Credit to @timsoret.bsky.social for teaching this lesson back on X:
A quick, simple, and nondestructive way to check your art's values is to create a new layer > fill it with black > change the blending mode to "color" or "hue" (for me, they both do essentially the same thing, I am using CSP)
Pixel art of Wanderer and the colossi from Shadow of the Colossus, depicted as Katamari characters, the bosses being rolled in a giant ball.
Haven't thought about this one in a long, long time. Colossal Katamari. Probably what most people knew me from before I started working on Owlboy

Work over the past 15 years. (Still trying to get used to Bluesky.)

I wish you find wisdom, peace & love. This is not a way to live. Besides, I’m not right wing or a Trump supporter, and you’re not the police. If I want to be there, I can and I will. Take care, cheers.
1. The Last Night is in development.
2. I'm not "intro crypto". Aren't we allowed to be curious?
3. AI is at the core of the premise of The Last Night since day 1, so of course I'm deep into it to figure out how it's going to shape the human condition long-term, for the best & for the worst.
