My husband works at Descanso Gardens and one of his regulars also knows @jenelleriley.bsky.social. So, we saw his show at the Largo tonight, doing some long form hilarious improv with his friends! Maybe this guy’ll make it big someday…

The way my parents used to tease me about my use of “like” is the way I tease my tween students about their use of “wait.”
STOP TELLING ME TO WAIT IM ALREADY TALKING TO YOU.
@jenelleriley.bsky.social and I love traaaaaaaaaains!
@descansogardens.bsky.social
A movie couple who would definitely have a podcast.
Like god BLESS them!!
I'm standing on the shoulders of great feminist musical theatre historians like Stacy Wolf, Elizabeth Wollman, and Jennifer Ashley Tepper. Absolutely check out their works now! Also a big thanks to @jackviertel.bsky.social for being my first interview & for hooking me up with Schulman & Ettinger! ❤️
For more details, here is my Abstract. If you wanna read the whole ding-dang thing, just let me know (it's long and academic, but it's good, especially if you like feminist Broadway history).
It was a lot of work, but it’s done. My advisors loved it and there’s talk of expanding my research into a book (I’m dying).
If it ever does become a book, I definitely want the Hirschfeld art on the cover... and to FINALLY get a Mandy Patinkin interview. 😉
… not to mention conducted oral history interviews with @jackviertel.bsky.social, Heidi Ettinger, Susan Schulman, Daisy Eagan, and Alison Fraser. I even went to the NYPL pro-shot archives to watch the original production of Garden and Schulman's revival of Sweeney Todd.
I spent two years working on my thesis entitled "Come to My Garden: A History of The Secret Garden and Women Creatives on Broadway." I combed through decades worth of books, reviews, articles, essays, interviews, podcasts, and blog posts…
Referencing YouTube videos in a bibliography is so funny cuz what you mean “MissPoochSmooch” is a citable source? 😂
You guys. I PASSED!!!!!!!!!!! I’m getting my masters. I’m officially a Musical Theatre Historian!! 😭😭😭😭😭
Dude it blows my mind how niche internet famous y’all are!! 😉❤️
I hate to be the “send me your good energy” gal but I’m defending my thesis today. The potential end of a two year journey delayed by a literal wildfire. I’m so nervous I could barf.
Hey when CalTech nerds are recognizing you…just saying!! 😉
You can see it trickling in. Sherie Renee Scott (much as I love her) is a great template.
lol what??
But you’re right, in crafting a historical timeline you can definitely see the tides turning in the late 90s
I remember when my mom saw Next to Normal on tour and she said “why does the middle aged husband have the same timbre and vocal range as the teenage boys?” And yeah 100%. Once you see it you can’t unsee.
Yeah there’s something there with the IP-ification as well as the BFA programs throughout the country. To me who lived through it, though, Elphaba was a shift. There’s something else about the disappearance of proper sopranos and baritones.
Blows my mind that these guys have been doing this since we were all at UCSC together. I genuinely don’t get how famous they are sometimes.
Like it starts with Elphaba going up on that cherry picker going “ahhhh-ahhh-ahhhhhh!” right??
I fear…I may have a PHD idea. It’ll probably never happen cuz Jesus it feels like a lot but I have it.
Tracking the history of the BFA belt and the homogenization of Broadway voices. A 25 year history.
There’s something there, right?
I did not see it! But it was a very funny rant.
An old theatre friend just messaged me to rant about how bad L5Y at the Hollywood Bowl was. LOL.
I rewatched it last night too! Still really holds up!!
I’m more of a jellybeans gal
I’m not mad about it. I fucking loooooooove deviled eggs
When you’re a childless secular humanist, Easter is pretty much St. Patrick’s Day with deviled eggs.
RIP to our king, Val Kilmer, who played Moses in two different musicals. One of them very bad.
