Chart of relative energy costs since 2010 shows a steady decline in wind and solar vs wild oscillations in the price of oil due to geopolitical events like the current war in Iran.
An economist friend passes along this graph of energy costs. He says, "Given this history, it is more than a little ironic that renewable energy is derided by fossil-fuel proponents as 'unreliable.'”

I’m bowled over by the response to this. Thanks all, and thank you new subscribers.
Please read the story, bc these activists trusted me with it when they could’ve gone somewhere bigger, and I want to ensure their work and what they’re exposing stays the focus. gillianbrockell.com/video-proves...

An odd editorial choice to polish the image of tobacco companies whose business model depends on losing half their customers permanently.
If tobacco products kill 1 in 2 customers, perhaps tobacco companies belong in the public health section -- not among games for users, including minors. Media influence matters.
@chrisgeidner.bsky.social I tried it as one word, and NYT's Spelling Bee rejected my answer. 😞

Trump’s new H-2A wage rule will radically cut the wages of all farmworkers - and that appears to be the administration's explicit intention: New estimates from @benzipperer.org & me at @epi.org show farmworkers stand to lose $4.4 to $5.4 billion annually under DOL’s updated Adverse Effect Wage Rate
How much weight would you attribute to ICE at Home Depot sites as well as construction worksite arrests?
The Shareholder Rights Group has a statement enumerating its concerns.
Curious: Do you see circular logic here? Private markets evade public scrutiny → SEC retreats from proxy oversight → fewer checks on issuers → tougher path for meaningful shareholder engagement? Would value your thoughts.
@matt_levine — your column today on private markets as “the new securities fraud” was spot-on. Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission just declared it will no longer provide substantive guidance on no-action submissions under Rule 14a‑8. www.sec.gov/newsroom/spe... 1/2.
NEW: The Trump administration's brutal removal of so many workers is projected to shrink the nation’s GDP by as much as 6.8% — a deeper hit than the one sustained during the Great Recession.

Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, on Standing with Immigrants Oct. 21, 2025 My dear brothers and sisters, today I speak to you as your shepherd, but also as a fellow pilgrim who shares the pain of many of our immigrant communities. Families are being torn apart. Children are left in fear, and communities are shaken by immigration raids and detentions. These actions wound the soul of our city. Let me be clear. The Church stands with migrants. We stand with a mother who crosses borders to feed her children. We stand with the father who labors in silence to build a better future. We stand with the young person who dreams of safety and a better future. Our parishes and schools will not turn away those who seek comfort, and we will not be silent when dignity is denied in the enforcement of the law, it is essential that we respect the dignity of every human being. Now I want to say something directly to those immigrants without documents. Most of you have been here for years. You have worked hard. You have raised families. You have contributed to this nation. You have earned our respect. As the Archbishop of Chicago, I will insist that you be treated with dignity. Americans should not forget that we all come from immigrant families. You are our brothers and sisters. We stand with you. God bless you all.
