In 1983, the photographer Tom Arndt heard about something interesting happening in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn: a casting call for extras in “Purple Rain.” See his images of Minnesotans who wanted to be in Prince’s new movie: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jB-nEf
Full disclosure. I did check out Claude Desktop once and just now found that it installed some of this nonsense. I only have one Chrome-based browser (Vivaldi) installed though.
Good details here if you’ve ever installed Claude Desktop and want to fumigate.

Minutemen Live at Cabaret Metro on 1985-11-03 archive.org/details/ajc03196_minutem...
I watched it at the time. Once or twice it resurfaced in later years. After the disaster, the floodgates opened on YouTube, and so I found it again. I shared it on Twitter; the post went viral. Those who had seen it, remembered well. Those who hadn't were amazed. It's still beyond words. It just is.
ghost.org is one that a few of my writer friends use and is free of any controversy. I’m relatively ill-informed about Georgia and have always appreciated your on the ground reporting. Would love to read longer pieces regardless of how frequent or infrequent. Maybe just start it?
Another scene that comes to mind is from the shit American version of Three-Body Problem. There’s NO WAY anyone can be subtle if they’re reading a copy of Delany’s DHALGREN in an airport. Even if they’re fake-reading, this is an incredible tell. 1sec to go from zero to “are you fucking kidding me?”

I couldn't find a screencap but in Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions (1995), one of the evil wizard's acolytes is a middle aged woman in a denim blouse with Kliban cats embroidered on it. Very funny combo of kitties in sneakers marching across your chest while you're screaming and covered in blood.

The Onion plans to turn Infowars into a comedy site with satirical echoes of the fringe conspiracy theories that Mr. Jones is known for. Tim Heidecker, one of the comedians behind “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, has been hired to serve as “creative director of Infowars.” He said he initially plans to parody Mr. Jones’s “whole modus operandi.” Mr. Heidecker has been working on his impression of Mr. Jones. But eventually, when that joke gets old, Mr. Heidecker said that he hoped to turn Infowars into a destination for independent and experimental comedy. “I just thought it would be just a beautiful joke if we could take this pretty toxic, negative, destructive force of Infowars and rebrand it as this beautiful place for our creativity,” Mr. Heidecker said in an interview. During a recent trip to Philadelphia, he traveled to the Liberty Bell to film a video in character as the new creative director of Infowars.
Get excited.

(I've loved this album for years and have been waiting for the super box. Also I only just now noticed that Roy Thomas Baker was a producer!)
There's actually a fun story behind this: the guy who was NYC superintendent of school buildings from 1891 to 1923 was an architect who believed in holistic learning, and wanted to inspire kids to rise out of poverty by giving them a sense of the possibility of granduer through construction.
I remember these ads everywhere too. What sticks out now is how much my opinions on the titles have changed. The Helfer/Sienkiewicz Shadow is a straight-up masterpiece and something I've re-read many times over. Ronin is the best cyberpunk comic. The others are fine, but sold my og issues long ago.
There's an entire month of Harry Smith activities coming up at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz. Starts on Saturday.
