Hearing animation fans talk about "good animation", it almost always comes down to how hard it can flex the 12 principles of animation in a way that's very obvious to the viewer.

It's cool and clearly takes effort, but there's a point where it feels more like jingling keys in front of the camera.

I love how well the limited animation look of anime translates to pixel art and old consoles/PCs

This is the splash art I created for Krita 5.3.0 / 6.0.0, aiming to depict a refreshing and pleasant summer seaside scene. Full version, source file and creative process can be found on my website in my profile info.

Arcueid (front) and Ciel (back) from Tsukihime and Melty Blood.
Both characters are in the darkness, lit by a large bright full moon.
Ciel's facing away from the camera

I like brainrotting over characters that are actually easy to draw for once

Usually it's more honest if you're able to talk about the lens you see a work, and how successful the work is from that perspective.

But you're usually not gonna convince people that see it through a different lens and don't even realize they're looking at it from a different lens

I think the hard part is that often what's lost in a remake is lost in favor of trying to appeal to a broader audience, so when you criticize those trends, it's easy to read it as criticizing that newer audience's tastes and not the industry forces pushing for a more homogenized experience

I think what's frustrating to me about remakes is how often the criticisms I have with them and why they exist in the first place are so far removed from the perceived quality of both works, so I almost always feel like an asshole for propping up a rough retro game over a more palatable modern game

Introducing some bullshit only some people will care about.

Introducing a new OC: Harper Phelps

She's a🏳️‍⚧️trans dragon🐲, works with Evelyn at a bougie alt-fashion store. She's generally pretty shy, but she's trying her best.

Drawn by my good friend, @engineerkappa.net

I feel silly criticizing games sometimes when the bar is often just a game that functions as intended, isn't an endless money pit, isn't advancing climate change, and isn't actively funding a genocide

It's easy to frontload all the good stuff in a game because you'll be working on that a lot and want to make a good impression, but somehow It's also easy to backload all the good stuff because you've gotten better at making the game.

It's insane how much things opened up when I stopped worrying about having an exact sketch > lineart > flats > rendering hierarchy

(especially when it comes to details that'd be easier directly painted on, like zippers or shoelaces)

it's funny being really dour and sad about current fighting games, but then I play an older one online that isn't trying to rope me into a GAAS ecosystem and it's like

yeah video games are awesome :)

genuinely losing my mind at how much easier it's going to be to color things now with the new Krita update, there are so many of these features we always missed from CSP, but now Krita has em!!

Like the close gaps fill. Also the propogate colors tool is insane/?? Really awesome for filling gaps

Texture groups mean you just don't have to worry about loading sprites most of the time, if you're not making an HD game or are particularly concerned with mod support.

I've never noticed any shader-related stutters either.

For all the beef I have with Game Maker, I see way less weird performance issues in GM compared to similar games made in Unity and Godot

There's something charming to me about retro games with classical music in them, especially when there's this tonal dissonance with what you're doing in the game itself
