Reading about early medieval education, I found a comparison of the Mahayana Nālandā & Theravada Valabhī to "contemporary educational centers of China such as Chima, Shih-chu, Lungmen, and Chiue-li."
All of these places are mysterious to me besides the 龙门石窟 (Longmen Grottoes). Anyone have leads?

A (very colourful!) Namgyalma mantra
from FPMT

according to Edward Coke, "every [town] that hath a leet or market ought to have a pillory and tumbrell &c. to punish offenders, as brewers, bakers, forestallers, &c" (3 co inst 219)

Another example; books.google.de/books?id=pFY... these two plates below are separated by one page. I suspect the poem is legible because Weston could trace it directly from the original, but the next page is not, because Watson copied the characters freehand from various dictionaries
Weston's other books have legible chinese characters, but they only occur as continuous chinese text: for example this poem he copied from the side of a cup books.google.de/books?id=9P4...
Not necessarily; the neat forms could have been copied/cut and pasted from a chinese dictionary, as they are really nothing more than the 'table of contents' of such a dictionary

but in the dictionary sections proper the characters return to their crudeness

Not all of it is that bad though: The parts about the radicals are crude but still legible.
To give you an idea of how horribly distorted Weston's characters are, here is a comparison of his characters with how they should be properly written (in red)
thank you!
for completeness this is part of a work on the chinese language Stephen Weston compiled

now I want to find the books that Klaproth was criticising...
Klaproth's 1815 "Grande exécution d'automne" for ¹Stephen Weston / ²Louis-Mathieu Langlès and their ¹Chinese / ²Manchu studies:
Place & date indicated in Chinese ("Beijing, Jiaqing 嘉慶 20") and Manchu ("Mukden [= Shenyang], Saicungga fengšen 20") respectively. Both on an 'inauspicious day' 凶日. 😼 1/
may I ask if the exact method has survived? I am interested to know if it is the same as a method that has survived in modern almanacs:
七七四十九,问娘何月有,
除去母年庚,再加一十九,
是男逢单数,是女变成双
It’s inaccurate to say Mario is brave and Luigi is cowardly
Luigi is afraid of death, so he runs away from danger. Mario is afraid of living, so he runs towards death. Both brothers are cowards in their own way

The book states the mantra
"would purify and transform the anger of anyone who recited, remembered or saw it. It was also believed that any living being who saw this mantra before dying would be reborn in heaven due to its power, even if they died in a state of rage. "...

The title page also refers to an earlier edition 'printed at Geneva, by the widow and heirs of Mr. John Calvin, in Maze Street, opposite the Spirit of Delusion, right next to Misunderstanding, in the newly falsified Bible, with disgrace and sacrilege'
