Hey #medievalsky #manuscriptsky - do you have any examples of codices made into scrolls or rolls? Any genre.

Did some pickup shots to display the materiality of this gorgeous gradual, specifically: drypoint doodles, damage to the binding that allows a view into its structure, stitched repairs, and the texture of ink on the page.
(RCL cod. e 2, Barbeau Gradual, Northern France, c. 1240-1260)
A little stop motion video I made of an almanac in the University of Rochester collection to try and give viewers an idea of how it functions 😊

There are diagrams like that in the Rochester Codex 😊
This is a fundamental point that 99% of higher-ed coverage, and 100% of immig coverage, have missed.

I was at a similar one in NY. Henry Rollins almost started a riot telling everyone to buy the water, set the water stand on fire, and then sell it back to them for $15 a pop to put the fire out.

Plese donate to the Middle English Texts series, a vital resource for teachinge, learninge, and studye: "With the recent and sudden termination of almost all NEH grants, our work is in jeopardy."
metseditions.org/donate?fbcli...
While the near-total loss of the NEH is horrific, it has been death by a 1000 cuts for decades: the loss of summer seminars abroad, of postdoc funding, of all of the tiny bits of $ that enlightened K-12 teachers' & junior faculty's work & lives. Sarah & I will be mostly fine; the next gen won't.
We're suing Trump to save library funding. Show up for our libraries, American Library Association.
NEW: ALA is going to court to stop the President’s attempts to illegally dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services.
The President does not have the authority to destroy a federal agency. That's why we're taking action with our co-plaintiff @afscme.bsky.social. #ForOurLibraries (1/3)
I was not consulted about this and I am not pleased.

Today was maybe the last chance to see short-eared owls before they head back north until next winter.
Aside from the obvious direct harm, what's so irritating is that a handful of spoiled ignorant assholes are breaking things that we all built together. They weren't content to own almost everything, they had to wreck what little they didn't own. It's vandalism on a mass scale and has to be punished
Want to go visit the national parks this year?
Sorry.
The reservation system is shut down, EMT personnel are gone, so don't get hurt or lost. No one can clean the bathrooms or cabins, so they'll be closed. Rangers are fired.

Photo of a fragment of a clay tablet shaped a bit like a diamond. Although it is only a fragment, the cuneiform text on it is well-preserved. There is a vertical line down the centre which indicates it once had at least two columns. The colour is reddish brown
“Do not bend your neck for that which cuts necks.”
A Sumerian proverb, as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.
Image is of an old brown leather covered book. The leather is cracking and broken in many places.
Inside cover of 17th century manuscript, hand stitching is visible as well as waste paper from another manuscript used as an end page is visible on the right side of the binding.
