Work in progress. Slowly getting there…

I love being stared at by so many portraits. I enjoy surrounding myself with my work—I need to look at it often to learn to love it. When I’ve just finished a piece, I tend to be incredibly critical, but that fades as time passes. Thankfully. #artstudio

(2/2) Looking back, I wish I had said: “How sad it would be if it could be done in just one click. How unfortunate if I couldn’t lose myself in hours of meticulous study, translating the beauty and complexity of life into layers of paint, instead of capturing it in an instant.

A common (and often critical) remark photorealism or hyperrealism is: “Why not just take a photo?” I remember during my first solo show, someone came up to me, clearly unimpressed, and asked why I didn’t just take a picture instead. I was flabbergasted and didn’t know how to respond. (1/2)

“Vita Volat” –> roughly translated: Life Flies
Sometimes life feels like it’s rushing past, completely out of our control. That’s what I tried to capture in this painting. It’s about those moments when you feel the weight of time slipping through your fingers.

Some days feel like a mirror… a moment where everything you try to push away comes closer instead. That’s what today feels like for me, and this painting reflects that. The blue tones evoke a mix of melancholy and solace. Is it a coincidence that today is blue Monday? Do we all feel this way?

For anyone that needs to hear this (and my younger self). If you want to be an artist, you already are one. Don’t chase “the best” or fear being “the worst”, for both really don’t exist. Avoid comparisons, create daily, stay focused, and your unique style will emerge… and that’s where it all begins.

Biggest painting I ever made: a journey of patience and precision. This piece measures 180x130cm/70.87 x 51.18” It felt incredible to see it come to life. Made me think about maybe doing a mural someday… “The big picture”, acrylics on canvas, 2022.

Staring into the void feels like my specialty at work. Sometimes, it even seems like I do that more than I actually paint.

Hello everyone,
My name is Roos, pronounced 'Rose' the Dutch way—same name, same flower. As an artist specializing in realism, I paint away the days. My models, predominantly women, often mirror self-portraits, blurring the distinction. Join me in this artistic journey🎨
