The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and City Paper were closed by their Trump-loving billionaire owners. Bezos is laying off a third of the WaPo staff. The AJC is cutting its staff. This is not a coincidence.

This isn’t about convicting Don Lemon. It’s unlikely that will happen. It’s about intimidating journalists & making them censure themselves out of fear of consequences. It’s about eroding the free press because the administration can’t afford the criticism.
Pittsburgh deserves worker-centered journalism. PAPER is raising funds to research, support and build out exactly that. I've joined several meetings and can say there is enthusiasm, community support and now grassroots money behind it. Learn more and contribute here: ourpapernow.org
If you're wondering why Virginia's Legislature is proposing a temporary change to the way we draw maps, the answer is Trump's red-state gerrymandering.

I am impeaching Secretary Kristi Noem, who is an incompetent leader and a disgrace to our democracy.
She wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area and has brought her reign of terror to Minneapolis. One of her rogue ICE agents shot and killed an innocent woman today. It must come to an end.

The closing of the CP and the PG aren't just like, a bummer, or like a regular fuck-the-Blocks moment. It's a drastic reduction in citizens' ability to stay informed and hold our local government accountable, which in today's political environment will have consequences that make my head spin.
So sad to hear about both the @post-gazette.com and @pghcitypaper.com shutting down this week. I’m not sure what Pittsburgh journalism will look like on other side of this.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which dates back to 1786, will cease operations in May, its parent company said, citing financial losses and a recent court decision in its yearslong battle with unionized staff. on.wsj.com/3NbQbQO

Hello! I wanted to share a GoFundMe campaign supporting former staff of the Pittsburgh City Paper. Please consider clicking the link below to contribute or share it with others who might want to help. Thank you! gofund.me/971b2f8b8
Well, here was my very last article at @pghcitypaper.com. My yearly round-up posted one day after the paper shut down.
I’m devastated about losing my job. I felt valued, seen, and had constant opportunities to grow as a person and a professional.
Thank you, all of you, for being a part of my life the past few years. You don’t know what you mean to me.
There were a couple of @pghcitypaper.com articles that were scheduled but not released when we got the bad news. The year-end round-up written by our Executive Editor, @alitrachta.bsky.social brought me to tears.
Keep in touch, Yinz. Follow us at @stacypgh.bsky.social, @colinbwilliams.com, @awaltz.bsky.social, @marsjohnson.bsky.social, @alitrachta.bsky.social
We will miss you. 💔
I wrote and scheduled this before the ax came down and I’m sharing it now b/c it celebrates how in awe I am of Amanda Waltz @colinbwilliams.com @stacypgh.bsky.social @marsjohnson.bsky.social & Rachel Wilkinson and always will be. Love you @pghcitypaper.com ❤️ www.pghcitypaper.com/news-2/cp-ye...
Need something to read tomorrow? The House released Jack Smith’s testimony … on NYE hoping no one will notice.
This is a loss for us, but it's a bigger loss for Pittsburgh readers. This city deserves better.
Ownership is folding @pghcitypaper.com. Like my now former co-worker, @colinbwilliams.com, I'm not surprised. I'll be on the lookout for new W2 roles while I continue to freelance.
