Killing of Kada Scott prompts hearing on Philly’s handling of domestic violence cases | City Council roundup “As the city of Philadelphia, I think we failed the young lady, right?” Council President Kenyatta Johnson said.

Kada Scott's death was preventable. The city's hearings into what went wrong must engage survivors, research experts, and advocates alongside officials to develop and implement effective policy/practice solutions. www.inquirer.com/politics/phi...

October 2nd is Wrongful Conviction Day. Women are less than 10% of exonerees. Why? Women face additional hurdles to overturn a wrongful conviction. Incarcerated women receive far fewer visits than incarcerated men. This is terrible for a variety of reasons. We're pleased to share that @paprisonsociety is providing affordable rides to SCI Muncy starting in October. Purchase tickets on their website: www.prisonsociety.org/services/transportation

If you're able, please send some encouraging words to Kim Joynes. She's an incarcerated survivor of sexual abuse and gender violence that began in childhood. Yesterday she was turned down for commutation of her LWOP sentence by PA Board of Pardons. She's served over 45 years in prison.

Kim has pursued every avenue of rehabilitation and education available to her and has embraced her work as a peer educator. She is highly respected among the women she is incarcerated with. From our vantage, she is a highly meritorious candidate for commutation.

Following his release, he continued on as a sexual predator & was subsequently convicted for sexually abusing a child. Nonetheless, he has been living in the community for decades.

She is the victim of sexual abuse and gender-based violence beginning in her childhood. Her relationship with the man who killed the victim in her case was a continuance of that abuse. That man was tried separately & received a lesser sentence. He was released from prison after a decade.

We are heartbroken by the Board of Pardons decision to reject Kim Joynes application for commutation. Kim has been incarcerated for 45+ years & has the support of the PA DOC, as well as a robust network of friends & family ready to support her reentry.

Just over a week before the PA Board of Pardons will consider Kim Joynes petition for commutation. She has served 4+ decades of LWOP for a murder committed by a man who was released in the 1990s. I'll be speaking on her behalf. You can tune in live next Friday to listen & support.
