I posted that diatribe against organized religion on the facebook wall of a guy I went to grad school with. Guess I touched a nerve. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Those of us whose interests have never been served by this history—i.e., those of us who aren’t cis straight men (which, unsurprisingly, also describes almost every theologian he cites (I counted 2 exceptions?))—might be forgiven for not finding religion’s dictates & rituals terribly meaningful.

...misogyny, homophobia, and virtually every war of the past 2 centuries.

It’s extraordinarily disingenuous of him to extoll the virtues of religion’s historically embedded direction and community and tradition while ignoring the fact that this history is DIRECTLY CAUSALLY RESPONSIBLE for the worst of our human atrocities—for tribalism, oppression, colonialism, ...

But the more I think about it, the angrier I get at his defense of organized religion as a mature, intellectually responsible, historically embedded path to the sublime, while spirituality without religion gets unfairly painted as an ahistorical navel-gazing rejection of universal moral truths.
