4 ways that we’re bucking the trends of women in STEM and some ways we could do better - The Developer Society Women make up 49% of the global workforce, but only 29% of the STEM workforce. This serious underrepresentation isn't just a numbers problem, but a missed opportunity. I’m proud to say that The Developer Society is bucking this trend - here’s how

Women make up 49% of the global workforce.
Only 29% of the STEM workforce.

So we looked at our own numbers at The Developer Society.

Some of what we found felt encouraging.
Some of it reminded us there’s still work to do.

Reflections on AI from Wagtail Space - The Developer Society The Developer Society are a not-for-profit digital coop dedicated to serving NGOs and groups with a progressive mission.

We talk a lot about values in the charity and third sector. We don’t always apply the same lens to the tech underneath it all.

Daniel Fairhead shares some reflections on open source, ethics, and why tools like Django and Wagtail make sense for charity work, even when the choices are not always the

Trauma-Informed Design: Meeting Users Where They Are - The Developer Society Creative Director Paul Evans and Founder Steve Hawkes share a holistic framework for embedding trauma-informed principles into design, code, and infrastructure.

Some users arrive on your website calm and focused.
Others arrive overwhelmed, grieving, or scared.

Trauma-informed design starts from that reality.

Paul Evans and Steve Hawkes share how we think about building digital spaces that reduce harm and respect users where they are.

Operations Manager and Charity Volunteer... a week in the life of Janina - The Developer Society By day I’m Operations Manager and a Director at The Developer Society, and outside of that I volunteer as Project Coordinator for The Hygiene Bank in the Tunbridge Wells area. The two roles might sound very different, but they actually overlap more than you’d expect. At The Developer Society, I’m all about solving problems, keeping things moving, and making sure projects run smoothly — and those same skills come in handy when I’m organising collections and supporting community partners.

Meet Janina, our Operations Manager and Director. By day, she keeps our projects running smoothly. In her spare time, she coordinates The Hygiene Bank in Tunbridge Wells, supporting over 100 families a week with basic hygiene products.

Beyond the Hype: What we learned from our first two AI solutions in grants analysis - The Developer Society The market truth is that you can’t just ‘throw your data at AI.’ Our Lead Developer offers an honest technical breakdown explaining why initial RAG and Map-Reduce attempts failed, and how the strategic use of LLM 'Tools' provided accurate, mission-critical insights for a major grants organisation.

Our Lead Developer Daniel dug into why—turns out the failures were more interesting than the success. Takeaway: AI can be useful, but setup matters way more than the tool.

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December, it’s a great moment to recognise how essential accessible digital experiences have become - both for the equality and barriers they can create. It's been great to be topping the Silktide charts today.

Sight Concern Bedfordshire - Silktide Index See how the Sight Concern Bedfordshire website ranks for accessibility.

🏆 Excited that our project with Sight Concern Bedfordshire scored 100% on Silktide’s accessibility index for UK charities: index.silktide.com/website/sigh...! This is really about removing barriers & showing what's possible without big budgets- more than just rankings (though not complaining 😀 )

Happy 20th birthday Django! | Alex Tomkins Happy 20th birthday Django! 🎂 It's been 20 years since the first public commit to Django, and the scary thing you realise when these milestones come along - just how long I've been using Django (over 17 years!). I remember discovering Django towards the end of 2007, and showing it to Stephen Hawkes. It was a framework in a language we knew was pretty good (Python!), but hadn't used for any web projects. The one thing that sold it for us at the time - an admin interface that was so easy to use, and didn't require much additional code. So much has changed since we started using Django, but it's always been something we've been able to rely on. Every release improves on the last, and always aims to be as backwards compatible as possible. We're perfectionists with deadlines, it's an easy choice every time. A huge thank you...

Happy Belated 20th Birthday Django! 🎂
Born from deadline-driven journalism in 2003, Django has powered everything from MP expenses analysis to Instagram & Spotify.
Big fans of it here at The Developer Society! 20 years of reliability & easy upgrades.

Does anyone else find that having code automating the APIs on several platforms at once feels a bit like a wizard fighting multiple foes?
