The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

NCAR provides the facilities, tools, & data critical for atmospheric sci education & research. Leading computer models of the Earth System are developed here. The training, continuing education, & sci exchanges NCAR makes possible are irreplaceable. Its dismantling would be chaotic & devastating.
NCAR and UCAR have released a statement. NSF has not provided any guidance to UCAR or NCAR leadership about this whole situation. news.ucar.edu/133054/ucar-...
It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.
This would be devastating to the field of atmospheric & Earth system science. @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is a world leader and beyond the important research their own scientists do, provides critical resources to the university community. Dismantling or defunding it would be a huge mistake.
