Thank you David! I enjoyed writing about that tournament in 2026 much more than I did five years ago 😂

How March Madness 2021 became a catalyst for change in women’s sports The viral weight room conditions at the 2021 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament marked a major turning point for women's sports.

This from @leverfever.bsky.social tells the story of what happened in women's sports in America. The change started with the "weightroom gap". From there, we see changes in media coverage and then changes in the size of audiences.

I cannot believe it’s been five years since the notorious March madness tournament where the women’s teams were given a few dumbbells and a stack of yoga mats as their “weight room.” I got to talk to former Stanford WBB strength coach, Ali McCracken, about what went down and where we go next.

“This is one of the most important times in our history for Olympic athletes to be speaking out, particularly against the rising global tide of fascism, imperialism, and genocide.”

I could not have said it better than @johannamellis.bsky.social who lent me her expertise in my latest:

What are some reasons why/how the Olympics have always been political?

Why must athletes use their platform, now?

@leverfever.bsky.social, fab author of the novel SURVIVING THE SECOND TIER, asked me some ?s.

so glad to help contextualize & push for the better that we all deserve.

It’s come to my attention that I have been posting Tuesday/Thursday teefs to my Instagram for some time, but for some reason, haven’t blessed Bluesky with photos of my boy.

Anyway, here’s Mac N Sneeze and his teefies this Thursday.

Probably my favorite quote from the interview 😂

I’m BACK on Bluesky with my latest for Extra Points! I had the privilege of interviewing Sarah Fuller, the first woman to play and score in a P5 (P4 now, I guess) football game. We discussed what it was like to just miss the NIL boat and how she turned her viral moment into a net positive anyway.

Really solid analysis here, and it touches on Reese’s statistical improvements that haven’t gotten anywhere near enough credit this season. History will favor Angel Reese.

Think the WNBA isn't profitable?

The NBA has said this about the NBA for more than 50 years.

And more than 50 years ago, two economists got the NBA's financial statements and found the NBA wasn't exactly telling the whole story.

Also so sorry, only one s in Marisa! I’m an editor for my full time job so that’s embarrassing 🙃

Yes, it’s so bizarre to me. And if you say anything about it on mainstream outlets, it gets rough. I’ve had to mute posts before due to the criticism/insults I’ve received for covering athletes other than Clark. Thankfully no threats (yet). Such a strange media space we live in.

I so admire your work, Marissa, as well as other women’s sports focused outlets and writers! Doing my best to carve out space in mainstream sports media because the differences I see are stark. Hope my piece didn’t come off as condescending to your efforts 💕

One thing that is super discouraging about being a freelance sports writer in the digital age is all the punching down from big figures in the industry that takes place online. If/when I get my dream job in sports media, I can’t imagine I’d be wasting my time picking on freelancers for likes.

My latest for @awfulannouncing.bsky.social (if you care to read past the headline) discusses Paige Bueckers’ and other players’ phenomenal seasons in the WNBA in spite of the lack of WNBA coverage this season. Also the fact that the W is thriving on scraps this year and why it deserves better:

Absolutely. We are not perfect. As a freelancer, I’m doing my best to highlight the W and other women’s sports as a whole in my limited free time in addition to my full time non-sports job. I’m hoping to be a positive contribution in a click bait-y media space.

Not trying to throw anyone in particular under the bus with my writing! I’m honestly doing my best to contribute coverage to a league I love that I see receive constant disrespect in the form of a lack of media coverage as a whole. Not an individual problem, but a systemic one.
