it was likely never going to beat out MA for me (literally my favorite game) but this is very much a "holy shit, two cakes!" moment for me, a roll & move enthusiast who rarely gets enough good ones
agree that the track is a downer, disagree that it's a killer. the rest of the game is really good imo! we've played 3 times now and it feels like we're only now fully grasping how to build particularly nasty teams - it was easy to overestimate some of the more complex villains and vice-versa
just went through the same with ours, which have now been battery swapped. shame to lose what once was but it is what it is

this might be controversial but I think this whole "pokemon" concept might have legs!
I know some people criticize the linear racetrack of towns, but 1) you want to explore every area to the fullest anyway for 'mons, and 2) the progression is so incredibly well tuned compared to older RPGs where if you walk west out of town instead of east you fight things that oneshot you
replaying gen 1 pokemon for the first time in ages and I'm blown away at how well structured this is compared to other RPGs of its era
it tutorializes but never wastes your time (far cry from modern pkmn!), characters are informative AND witty, it ramps up complexity perfectly, genuinely impressive
