Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet.
This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

It's crazy how lucky we are that both cereal grains and legumes exist on this planet
Two edible plant groups that are easy to domesticate, and complement each other both in terms of what they do to soil (e.g. cereals are nitrogen-hungry, legumes fix nitrogen) and in terms of nutrition

Adam Morton Chris Bowen to begin Cop31 climate summit president's role remotely Chris Bowen's role as president for negotiations at the Cop31 climate summit in Turkey later this year will kick off remotely. With the fuel crisis raging and Bowen giving daily press conferences on the government's response, the climate change and energy minister said he would not fly to Berlin next week for the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, an annual meeting of representatives from about 40 countries. A spokesperson for the minister said he "considers his travel carefully" and would not fly for the meeting hosted by the German climate action ministry on Tuesday and Wednesday. "In this instance he will take advantage of the virtual attendance and continues to engage closely with all his international counterparts. Australia will also not be represented at ministerial level at the first global conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels in Colombia starting next Friday.
Australia's energy minister is skipping global meetings on accelerating the phase-out of fossil fuels because he has to stay in Australia to deal with the fallout from not phasing fossil fuels out fast enough.

this morning, mamdaniâs team got in touch with me to float a new tax proposal: if your net worth exceeds $5 million and you dress badly, youâll be hit with a 10% annual levy for âvisual pollution.â i would be in charge of deciding if the outfits are bad.

âItâs a couple of things that work beautifully in concert. First: no music. Audiences are so sophisticated, but what theyâre not accustomed to is not being told how to feel,â Wyle says. âYou take all that out and it forces a level of engagement where youâre now looking for clues within the frame of the screen, which forces you to look up from your phone. And I think that is extremely engaging, especially to young viewers who arenât accustomed to being asked to participate in a nonpassive way in the viewing experience.
âSecond point, shooting it with almost exclusively 50-millimeter or 65-millimeter lenses, which is the most comparable to the human eyeâand only shooting from the point of view of a human being thatâs present in this space. There are no cameras on gurney wheels going in the hallway. Thereâs no cameras on the ceiling looking down from a God point of view. You are limited to the perspective of a participant. You can look away, but you canât leave, and it becomes an endurance test for you to stay on your feet as long as weâre on our feet. Which [brings me to my] third point: real time. Real time has an aggregate sense of tension that you donât get in any other form of storytelling. What happened before is happening now, and these two things are going to add up to the next thing. And if we throw more ingredients into this cooker and keep ratcheting it up, itâs going to pop.â
Wyle makes eye contact for his next point, delivering it with a Robby-esque matter-of-factness. âFourth point: The election went the other way,â he says with a shrug. âWe could have been a really good show with a lot of nice things to say in a perfectly normal Kamala Harris universe. And instead we became almost a beacon of hope and humanity in an alternative universe. But in the midst of that, fifth pointâthis is essentially competence porn. Youâre watching really smart, dedicated people do what only they know how to do at a level that you donât know how to do it, and youâre so fucking glad that theyâre there doing it, and compartmentalizing their own stuff to put your broken pieces back together. Youâre so reassured by knowing that there are people out there that laugh and joke and have the ability to lock in like that.â
this is fucking unreal stuff from Noah Wyle on the magic of The Pitt. www.gq.com/story/noah-w...
A white garment with some kind of food stain. Humiliating.
A pair of dirty hands rest on a car engine. Rough, tough, cool.
Here is an easy solution:
Food stains are humiliating, as they suggest you're a little baby who can't feed themselves.
Oil stains, such as those you'd get from working on your car, suggest you're tough, independent, and skilled.
Thus, simply cover your food stains with used motor oil.

Just watched the Artemis II re-entry and splashdown, which was almost textbook in how well it went. My main takeaway as a layperson following this mission is that itâs striking how much better NASA is at this stuff than the various private operators.
something that wrinkles my brain every time I remember it is the fact that total eclipses are only possible on earth because the moon and sun appear to be the same size in our sky, due to the insanely, astronomically unlikely fluke that the moon is 400x smaller than the sun but 400x closer to us.

Iâm probably the first person to ever say âdumps like a starshipâ right?
Realizing that some of my inexplicable sadness about the Artemis II stuff is that it feels like a trans-dimensional communication from an America that took a different path and chose joy instead of fear and hate.
