My awesome friend @therachel.bsky.social understood right away, and she always makes a joke about the new partner’s name that I pretend I’m too evolved to find funny, but it (and she) always cheers me up
It was the shot and chaser that got me- not only do I get replaced again but then my sister with whom I’m very close has no memory of this major life event. She hasn’t always had these memory problems, so it’s jarring when it happens and it’s still hard not to take it personally

She had no explanation for why this would happen but promised to fix it. I went back to the conference determined not to let it bother me. Of course it did bother me, so I texted my sister to tell her about it, and she responded immediately “who’s [name]?”
Ultimately I had to call them and explain it to a human CSR, who confirmed that when I called her system said the wrong [again very unique] name and I had to explain the whole thing to her and have her switch me back. I started crying a little bit when she was like “well, do you know any [name]?”
I started freaking out a little bit and texting things like “escalate” “help” “urgent” “operator” but I never got another response from the system
In subsequent texts, the system switched from calling me my correct first name to calling me by the new partner’s name! I said “I’m sorry, I’m not [name]” and then “no one with [name] should be associated with this account” but no more responses
So a few years ago, my wife left me for a woman with a pretty distinctive first name. It’s long enough ago that it’s not front of mind anymore. I was sitting in a math talk this morning answering an automated text from my vet pharmacy.
