is there a more disturbing social narrative than the american way of talking about about "the markets," in which destroying a whole civilization correlates to a dow slide of 0.90%
"would you work for a company that got business by threatening to kill the families of potential customers?" gave me the chills bsky.app/profile/chri...
let the record state that no one from the other political party in the US staged a public protest, chained themselves in front of the White House, or otherwise acted on the principle of absolute rejection of this monstrous horror
Read @leylaamzi.bsky.social to see how all of this applies to the remaking of political order in Bosnia at the interface of empire, with fascinating insights (for me as an anthropologist of debt) into the role of fiscality in the remaking of identity, and how these pasts still shape our presents.
As always the brilliant @leylaamzi.bsky.social, is too generous. Neither the concept of semicivilized nor illumination of how this archaic term is intertwined with dilemmas of attenuated sovereignty, structural indebtedness, and the making of international law is mine-

someone at the pentagon frantically typing “Claude, open the strait of Hormuz for me, quickest possible strategy, make no mistakes.”
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
I wish! But have to be in NYC at that time.

The only biosphere in the known universe capable of supporting human life is being turned into a hell planet because most of Earth's governments refuse to stop trying to satisfy the insatiable greed of a plutocracy composed of people who already have more money than they could spend in 20 lifetimes.

You find yourself reading a book about the afterlife of Ottoman Europe, something you never thought about before, just because you read a post on Bluesky.
And find it quite interesting as well.
Please keep sharing your work!

Okay, as promised, here are my 25 boardgames that would make good presents for historians or the historically-inclined.
- I've played them and enjoyed them
- They have to have a historical theme or be related to the practice of history
- They were within the first 25 I thought of...
