Our new Nature Communications paper shows that caterpillars are NOT safer in temperate regions as believed, if we consider also predation in forest canopies. tinyurl.com/catexNC1

Friday (soon to be) lab news — we are thrilled!
Huge congrats to Jakub Pawlik for securing funding for his new project in the Belledonne mountain range, exploring how elevation and warming shape spider communities.

It was great talk you gave. Thank you.
We are back from the conference. It is Friday ... and our new paper just went online! 🎉
The results of the work indicate substantial sub-canopy warming in Southeast Asia, posing potential risks for tropical biodiversity.
The work is now out in Geophysical Research Letters.
For most lab members, it doubled as an advanced course in working under pressure — calmly navigating the chaos that come with preparing an event. As for me, in my attempt to escape the week, I learned a valuable lesson about not flying too high ...
This week’s lab highlight looks back at the Zoological Days. For our attending students, it was a great opportunity to share ideas, reconnect with colleagues, and celebrate zoology. 🎓Contratulations to Jakub Pawlik for his award for a great poster. 🏆

🎉 Traditional Friday Highlight!
Forget about papers this week! We’re are thrilled to share that Anna Mrázová has been awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship 🥳with her ORNISCOPE project! Huge congratulations, Anna — we’re so proud! 🐦✨

This means that conservation measures targeting endemic species may not fully conserve the range of avian ecosystem functions.
The study gives a trait-based overview of contribution of endemic species to ecosystem functioning in New Britain. While island endemics tend to be overall more vulnerable to disturbance, some functional characteristics tied to disturbance sensitivity are more prevalent among non-endemic birds.
🎉 FRIDAY IS HERE AND SO IS … OUR NEW PAPER! 🎉
I’m thrilled to share a brand‑new paper by — K. Korejs, R. Hazell, B. Koane, P. Toko and G. Sosanika. If you’re into island biogeography, functional ecology, or just love birds doing important ecological jobs, this one’s for you. tinyurl.com/Korejs2026
Last few hours for submitting your abstract for European Conference of Tropical Ecology in Passau in February. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this vibrant gathering of tropical ecologists. Act now — and don’t be like me, leaving it for 11 PM tonight! 😅 gtoe2026-passau.de/call-for-abs...
🐦⛰️ What drives dramatic elevational shifts in avian roles within ecosystems? Korejs, @czsam00.bsky.social and colleagues link feeding specialisation to functional diversity along a continuous 200–3700 m rainforest gradient in Papua New Guinea.

It's Friday, after all: New publication of this week is a collaborative paper resulting from the project Oak Bodyguards. multitrophicinteractions.blog/2025/04/11/n.... Thanks to Bastien and Elena for pushing this forward and keeping me on board for years.
Finalizing the work with students, while kicking out the field work ... these days are busy (and the transition between grant-writing and the approaching submission is painful). multitrophicinteractions.blog/2025/04/03/s...
They asked: "Do plasticine caterpillars accurately measure bird predation? and conducted a camera trap experiment." - Curious to know if years of poking fake caterpillars were worth it? Keep reading.
Because it is Friday, and what better way to celebrate than with another scientific revelation? We present a new contribution to science. This time, fresh from the hands of "our" postdoc Áňa Máňa and her current collaborators in France.

The PhD student conference was going well. Many nice talks and progress reports. Thanks to Jakub and Krystof for representing our work with their good talks. And finally, for the purpose of many more conferences happening in coming month, we also updated our lab logo.
A few more days to apply! Together with @jcsvenning.bsky.social and as part of @econovoau.bsky.social we're offering this fab 2-yr postdoc position: international.au.dk/about/profil...
