2. The synthesis of phenazine pigments is regulated by the quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms. This system relies on autoinducer molecules, such as acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) & Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS), which coordinate the expression of various virulence factors, including phenazines.

1. Phenazine play a role in infections by acting as redox-active secondary metabolites and quorum sensing signaling molecules. They inhibit the proliferation of competing microorganisms & mammalian cells by inducing oxidative stress, thereby enhancing the bacterium’s survival and pathogenicity. 

The production of phenazine pigments, including pyorubin, serves multiple functions for P. aeruginosa:
1. Virulence
2. Quorum Sensing Regulation
3. Biofilm Formation

Pyorubin is produced by certain strains of P. aeruginosa. While pyorubin is less extensively studied than other pigments like pyocyanin, it is part of the phenazine compound family. These pigments contribute to the characteristic colouration.
