Guest Post — Diamond Open Access Needs Institutions, Not Heroes - The Scholarly Kitchen Today's guest blogger asks: What would it mean to support community-led publishing as infrastructure, rather than as a collection of heroic individual efforts?

Diamond Open Access won’t scale on volunteer heroics alone. It needs real institutional infrastructure, recognition, and long-term ownership.

Why is research led by women retracted less frequently? - LSE Impact A recent study found research by women had fewer retractions. Are women betters researchers, or does the finding reflect wider structural issues?

👀ICYMI: "retractions are not simply moral verdicts. They are administrative outcomes embedded in a system shaped by hierarchy, prestige and power."

Enlightened Publishing Workshops for navigating academic publishing for early-career academics (graduate students, post-docs)

The landscape for academic publishing is rugged. How does #PeerReview really work? What is #OpenAccess, #DORA or #PlanS? How do they affect my research and my career? I’ve developed a workshop intended to support early-career researchers as they find their own answers and their own way. Have a look!

Very impressive work, David. And very important!

I’m deeply concerned about the state of academic publishing. Incentives clearly work and the wrong incentives have been put in place – by universities, research councils, politicians. We have to help early-career researchers figure out how to navigate this crazy landscape.

I think that’s where I’m really falling short. Haven’t really figured out that part of the system yet. Tips on what to read to better understand this?

I feel like there’s something I’m doing wrong here at Bluesky. Are you getting traction?

PhD candidates need a guidebook to understand the academic journal system. They need good ways to think through dilemmas and challenges about #OA, #DORA, #plan-s, CC-BY and much much more. I’m writing that book. It will be done by Easter. Should I do it publicly? How? LinkedIn? Substack others?

I’m starting to think it’s getting closer to the time when #Obama needs to do an intervention with #Biden. Run, Michelle, run!

As of today - November 21, 2023 - I have a #Norwegian passport for the first time in my life. I’ve lived in #Norway over half my life and I’ve waited patiently for the process to run its course. Now that I’ve reached this point, I have to say that it feels pretty good. Tusen Takk!
