It’s a brilliant piece, as are so many of her works. The Ballade for piano and orchestra is amazing, if you don’t already know it!

Reflecting on a gorgeous weekend with SO many colleagues and friends. When you’re making music at such a high level with so many friends, it really does never feel like work. Huge thanks to everyone involved performing and behind the scenes!

Thanks, Philippa! Really hope you enjoyed performing the piece!

And I think in the case of both SoL/Wilson and Pygmalion, it’s in part their sound that’s getting the reviewer’s attention: the energy in both is palpable and makes for an exciting listening experience—I think that’s why they’re getting so many ‘record of the week’ spots, etc

That’s interesting because I think their recording output is quite focused on 20th/21st-cen. rep, and a lot of it comes with a distinct sound Wilson has developed with them. My understanding is that they record a lot of rep all at once, which is how they can have such a steady stream of releases…

The composer who thinks the Passion story is for us all Oliver Tarney’s St Mark Passion explores what makes us human and our connections with each other — it is not a piece solely for Christians, but for everyone.

There’s a brilliant new recording of an earlier version of the Quartet by the London Chamber Ensemble. Howells let revising the work for different reasons (he once left the MS on a train). It’s really interesting to compare the different versions!

Coming in hard is this GEM from Charles Koechlin. I've recently spent a lot of time getting to know Koechlin's music and boy oh boy are we sleeping on all this.

Originally for voice and piano, the later orchestration is gorgeous.
