Well don't buy an HP, they use sneaky software trickery to reject ink cartridges that weren't sold by HP at a ridiculously high price.

You're best off having a printer with refillable ink tanks, that avoids the above entirely. Epson and Canon are pretty good, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.
