Iran is retaliating against the U.S. with strikes on American sites throughout the Middle East. Our reporter Eric Schmitt looks at the damage these attacks have caused and what they say about Iran’s strategy in the war. Read more: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
We identified at least 17 damaged U.S. sites and other installations, several of which have been struck more than once since the war began. Our analysis is based on satellite imagery, verified social media videos and statements by gov. officials. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
The footage seems to contradict the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the event, which the agency said began after the victim approached the federal agents with a handgun and the intent to “massacre” them.

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites
The style is now unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war
An analysis of dozens of 3D animations published by the Israeli army discovered digital assets sourced not from classified intelligence but rather from commercial libraries and content creators as far afield as Scotland and Port Orchard.

We interviewed neighbors and former workers, as well as reviewed dozens of photos, videos, recent and historical satellite and aerial imagery of mass grave sites. My colleague Charlie Smart reported from Damascus and captured one remaining trench with photogrammetry.
Our investigation into the Assad regime’s use of mass graves shows how the practice grew from a few bodies in existing tombs to industrial-scale trenches. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
