There's a pretty decent alternative out now; Affinity. They used to be single-purchase, but they've teamed up with Canva to offer their Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for free in one program. There is a subscription plan, but that's only to use Canva's online tools.

I was thinking about doing that, but not sure, I still am quite fond of the current one, as it doesn't stand out at all, doesn't ruin the image. I tried some approaches with this one, but the 'invisible' one I have now just appeals a lot to me
