How can behavioral interventions help scientists go greener? Thomas Freese and our colleague Brian Wagner, together with other researchers from @rug.nl, recently carried out a study on which behavioural interventions influence chemistry lab conduct:

En je kunt het volledige Nederlandse rapport hier lezen:
"Aan de slag met gedrag! Duurzaam en adaptatiegedrag gemakkelijk en vanzelfsprekend maken"
Here's the full report - "Engage with Behavior Change! Making sustainable and adaptation behaviour easy and obvious" - in English on the @klimaatraad.bsky.social site:
Our colleague Linda Steg sums up the @klimaatraad.bsky.social's report on how the potential of behaviour change is currently underutilized, and how governments can make sustainable behavior more accessible, make environmentally-damaging behavior unappealing and eliminate counterproductive incentives
Post doc tip: HySuccess, a project studying the role of #hydrogen in a sustainable energy system, is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher at @unileiden.bsky.social to study the labour market effects and political economy of the green transition.
Broadly defined #environmentalism may be one way in which prosocial tendencies (acting for the benefit of others) are expressed, extending the circle of “others” beyond humans. Congrats @gpalomovelez.bsky.social on his latest co-authored paper (formatted version coming soon)!
The #energytransition is a technical, social and environmental puzzle. Discover how community engagement, public participation and citizen empowerment can spark #sustainableenergy solutions on #Ameland this summer during the @rug.nl Summer School! Application deadline: 8 May

It's only in person, sorry!
Our colleague PhD candidate Xinran Wang will be defending her thesis on 7 May! Her research focuses on the roles of different societal actors (government, business and citizens) in addressing climate change, and how capable and responsible they perceive themselves and each other of taking action.
@lwhitmarsh.bsky.social @thijsbouman.bsky.social @rug.nl @rug-gmw.bsky.social
🌱 Session one will be about how different actors can contribute to addressing societal issues, and will feature the following speakers and topics: 🟢 Lorraine Whitmarsh MBE (University of Bath): Carbon capability: multiple roles and contexts for #climateaction 🟢 Madeline Judge (University of Otago): Local council staff's perceptions of the role of councils and other actors in taking climate action 🟢 Jeffrey Lees (Faculty of Economics and Business - University of Groningen) Pluralistic ignorance and managers' support for organisational #sustainability policies 🌱 Session two will address the question of what motivates or inhibits social change action across actors, and will be discussed by: 🟢 Martijn van Zomeren (Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen): Psychology social contract as a buffer against increasing #polarization in society 🟢 Jan Willem Bolderdijk (University of Amsterdam): Lessons for social tipping from the phasing out of Black Pete in the #Netherlands 🟢 Thijs Bouman (Environmental Psychology Groningen): Misperceiving others' values: implications for #sustainable #transitions The programme will end with a plenary discussion led by our colleague Linda Steg (followed by lunch).
Join us on 8 May, when leading environmental psychology researchers from around the world (and across @rug.nl) will discuss what governments, businesses, organisations and individuals can - and should - do to tackle #climatechange

The German government has decided to react to the fuel price increase with the usual tax cut / #Tankrabatt

plus @annaholligan.bsky.social reporting from the #Randstad about what the ad ban on flights, fast food, combustion engine cars and other fossil fuel-reliant products and services in public spaces is looking like in #TheHague, and what it will look like in #Amsterdam starting soon
The excellent BBC podcast The Climate Question did a whole episode about this very topic with @bbcmarcosilva.bsky.social earlier this month! pca.st/z9p4psfz
In 2025, The Hague became the first city in the world to ban public ads for fossil-based products and services. @thijsbouman.bsky.social says that such bans are vital for normalising sustainable consumption, and changing norms increase acceptability of other climate measures.

There is little evidence to support the prominence of psychological distance: most people actually perceive climate change as occurring now and close by.

This event next month here in #Groningen by the Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development sounds really interesting, especially @mathias07.bsky.social's talk on #climate #tippingpoints and the role of scientific disagreement and public trust in the face of uncertain evidence.
'Praten over onze eigen circulaire maatregelen en vrienden, familie en organisaties aanmoedigen, kan bijdragen aan een meer circulaire economie.' ♻️

What are the most impactful actions we can take towards creating a #circular economy? Our colleagues Isabel Pacheco and Julia Koch share research insights on how our personal behaviour can accelerate the circular transition & what actions make the biggest difference.

Research by our colleagues on Arctic tourism is seeking to answer a similar question raised by Sir David Attenborough's documentaries: is travelling to the ends of the Earth the only way to inspire conservation behavior, or is seeing footage of fragile habitats enough to inspire real action?
"A lot of us have #ecoanxiety. We’re worried about #climatechange, and feel there’s nothing you can do as an individual. But what you can do is go out into a garden."
