Contrary to "experts," food is not the answer. What matters is air.
Too cool and witty and twangy for the hardcore and grunge crowds.
Contrarian pro Klo turn in second half of article can’t overcome the excellent case against her in the first half!
Amen!

She's brilliant. A model communicator. Very inspiring.
Illustration of a Metro bench showing the 4 foot width.
Interesting that this is exactly the maximum width of a Metro bench, to prevent anyone from lying down.
4 could be a magic number for hostile design, both intentional and negligent.
When's the last time the Stranger had a piece as informative, thorough, and reflective of the current moment as this? I do like hearing about the legends of comedy and whatnot, but the Stranger has become an events promotion page with a smidgen of news.

With this and their piece on the Punk Rock Flea Market, the Guardian is covering Seattle with more acumen and cultural awareness than local outlets ... Seattle Times had a whole ass article about Starbucks relationship with Seattle that didn't even mention this.
That doesn't sound like trepidation so much a normal thing any elected official would say about any plan.
Honestly, the fact that Wilson got EVERYone on council, even [descriptor redacted] like Maritza Rivera and Bob Kettle to support her plan seems like clearly the most newsworthy angle here.
Kroman doesn't even mention that the vote for the mayor's shelter bills was unanimous, preferring to highlight "trepidation" from "several" council members, though he quotes only Dan Strauss, who says "in most circumstances the council would not pass a budget bill without an exact plan nailed down.”
You could write this same story with these same facts as
"Mayor receives unanimous support from City Council for shelter bills, achieving unprecedented alignment on a notoriously contentious issue."
It's so exhausting and depressing that we declared homelessness an emergency more than a decade ago, but any small effort (and 4,000 shelter beds, while treated like an insanely ambitious number, is nowhere near adequate) to respond to this emergency is regarded as unrealistic and naive.
The public in the Enormous Question of "public safety" of course never refers to our unhoused neighbors, who are very fucking unsafe.
We'd love to send an ambulance but what about traffic safety, congestion, and pollution? Sure, you're bleeding out, but Serious People have Enormous Questions.
A classic example of "Oh, so you're tying to solve this specific problem? How are you going to solve ALL problems?"
David Kroman on Katie Wilson's shelter effort:
"Wilson’s goal of 4,000 new beds is more ambitious than any made before her and carries with it enormous questions about funding, space, management, safety and paths to permanent housing."
Also, this is a big deal:
"Sharon Lee, CEO of the Low Income Housing Institute ... recounted a recent visit to a potential site with the mayor’s staff, in which all city departments were in attendance – water, sewer and electricity – a level of coordination that was previously unheard of."
It's also fair to raise the issue of ppl who don't want shelters in their neighborhood, but there will always NIMBYs. The impossibility of making them happy about the solutions we need should not be positioned as an insurmountable obstacle.
I think it's fair to critique the financial feasibility of building shelters. But any analysis is incomplete that does not include the cost of NOT providing shelter.
