Public Health in Action Seminar Series 2025/2026 | University College Cork Learn, Study and Research in UCC, Ireland's first 5 star university. Our tradition of independent thinking will prepare you for the world and the workplace in a vibrant, modern, green campus.

Link to my recent #PublicHealth in Action talk, about why it is so hard to get people to think about 'obesity' systemically, and why we should focus on on equitable food access instead. @publichealthucc.bsky.social #commercialdeterminantsofhealth #foodpolicy #foodjustice

Thanks Darren, for attending and for your interesting and helpful thoughts as always!

Public health researchers (like myself) want to take an upstream view of obesity, focusing on environmental factors rather than individual behaviour. In this talk, I argue this is not possible with obesity. Whether we like it or not, obesity just IS an individual and moralised concept.

Would love to mobilise a load of women to comment "who??? How is this news??" under posts about footballers or whatever aul lads care about as revenge, but the reality is that women typically have better things to be doing

The ultra-processed foods problem is driven by commercial interests, not individual weakness. Here’s how to fix it Without policy action and a coordinated global response, ultra-processed foods will continue to rise in human diets, harming health, economies. It’s time to act.

Nice summary of @thelancet.com series on #ultraprocessedfoods #upf. My take: the problem is not individual foods, but:
(1) changes in dietary patterns driven by
(2) undemocratic corporate influence which
(3) narrows options especially for those on lower income. theconversation.com/the-ultra-pr...

Ferment: How we can cultivate the revitalising power of microbes Gut health is now recognised as vital to our physical and mental health, and by harnessing the benefits of fermentation, Tim Spector encourages us to take control of it at home

"Gut health is now recognised as vital to our physical and mental health..." Is it? Am I being unfair or is that way overstating the current state of the science in this area? (About which I know very little, admittedly, except insofar as it bumps up against population nutrition!)

There is nowhere safe to go in Gaza.

Israeli forces have ordered thousands of Palestinians in Gaza City to evacuate as the military prepares another major assault.

States should act to prevent genocide in Gaza and press Israel to reverse course.

Lol, you know you're Irish when ... you're all confused watching a TV show or film until you realise you're supposed to be assuming the British spies/soldiers/cops the good guys. Also the immersion, Mass, etc, hahaha lol.

This is so bad.
This will be used to make profit. This will be used by private insurance companies. This will be used for advertising. And shitty studies. No chance that this will help patients

sure, Adobe updated every 15 minutes, but the pdf reader worked fine for years ... until, of course, they added AI (dis)functionality. Opening a basic text document in 2025 should not feel as messy and bloaty as pirating music in 2003, but here we are.
