A few notes on my new Curious Minds series on Toronto cinemas at @hotdocs.bsky.social, Corruption on 35mm at the Revue & how to get in on the members-only screening series. thedowntowntheatre.substack.com/p/marquee-ch...
I never thought the first film I ever release on my own label would be a documentary about a rock. But that should tell you something about how good it is.
Watched this on laserdisc last year, so I'm looking forward to the 4K upgrade + Willow's essay!
Had forgotten about some of these screenings, especially the later ones.
When I spoke to Brian Allen of Premier theatres back in November for a story on small-town theatres, he said "if you’re paying rent on a property, you’re cooked." A few months later, Premier announced the closure of the Capitol in Yellowknife. Now, only three theatres remain in Canada's North.
Only three movie theatres remain in Canada’s North. What now? My latest for CBC Arts. www.cbc.ca/arts/only-th...
In @thestar.com today I wrote about the dreamy rekindling of space travel coinciding w Toronto’s terrestrial tear down of a communal place to share the Dark Side of the Moon.
I’m fascinated by theatres that are blips in Toronto's cinematic timeline. Places that shut down just as quickly as they opened, but still left their mark. The Cinecampus is one of these venues.

If only there’d been a print of his Sam Fuller shark movie circulating at the time.
Spotting a young @peterkapow.bsky.social & other pals. I think I met 90% of my current friend circle at these screenings. The movies are indeed the best.
Oh wait, Shamus is the one with that opening sequence (and Morris the Cat)
Was that the night we did moustaches?
And good god, that opening scene. Like Buster Keaton.
I still count the early test screenings, Camille, Play It As It Lays and Martin as my fave screenings.
Glory days.
I will somehow find room for a wall of PS zines at the exhibit when my book launches.
@jessehawken.bsky.social didn’t think I had the PDF of the Camille 2000 zine I did.

These Metzger restorations have been absolutely sublime.
Thanks Don!

Bonus tie-in screening! On June 20 I'll be focusing on the history of film censorship in Ontario, and will be joined by Atom Egoyan for a screening of THE ADJUSTER!
I'll be taking over the Curious Minds series at
@hotdocs.bsky.social in June to talk about Toronto's cinemas: the history & survival of our neighbourhood theatres, their communities, the fight against film censorship, among other things. Join me!
One of the other banks is currently running some ad campaign where a nurse is sitting on public transit and says: “rich? You know what makes me rich?” and then details all the back-breaking life-saving work he does at work all day.

Never thought I'd see the day where the 1994 film Exit to Eden would lede a news story, but Saskatchewan is following the lead of other provinces & scrapping film classifications. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Had completely forgotten about White Lies.
