It's time for your regularly scheduled reminder:

Narwhals and giant squid: They're real and they're spectacular!

Megalodon: It was real, but is definitely super-duper extinct now.

Mermaids: Not real. (No, manatees do not count).

Thanks,
The Management

Here are some examples of paralarvae with odd morphology that I will be studying in a few months!

Super excited to start this program. I have been working towards being a squid scientist proper my whole life, and I am finally there! It doesn't feel real yet, but I am so looking forward to it!

I have officially been accepted into the Master's program of Coastal and Oceanic Systems (PGSISCO) at Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)! I will be studying the morphology of mesopelagic squid paralarvae! The plan is to start in August. I'm flying to Alaska for work in the meantime!

Is it cause a printer inks?

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

That is the mystery of it I guess. Cause it only had negative effects at 100% purity. To be fair the Lamorn said it reactivated dormant genes in their body, and we see it in the lava. Maybe the life on the planet adapted to volcanic eruptions of it with those genes.

The thing that gets me about this whole discussion is I think it is implied that the Lamorn have been using Green Energy for millennia. The priests knew about it, and the tests they did in the psychic era were positive. Now should they have done more testing? Sure, but its not as bad this way imo

Drawing of a toy capsule vending machine with one of the spherical capsules rolling out of the dispenser. But all the capsules are eggs containing baby flamboyant cuttlefish! The structural parts of the machine are colored in red and black.

Amazing idea, I love it! Thank you! Two versions as I'm not sure which I like better.

This was in an aquarium. I'm identifying a lot of shells and skeletons in our collection and had this non native starfish. We only have books to ID native animals

2 months ago 0 0 0 0

Do you think there is a way to make it easier to look up a species based on just the skeleton?

Thank you for the help!

Would it be better to tie the common name to the genus? How do you narrow the skeleton down to the species?

2 months ago 1 0 1 0

I'm in Washington State. It was found in the collection of my aquarium. I thought it could be that genus but idk what the characteristics are. Would you or I be able to update the Wikipedia entry for this species to include the common name I had found?

Is there a book or good resource on identifying echinoderms of the world? I saw someone selling these online, or a similar star, saying they were imported from the Philippines. Thank you in advance for the help!

@echinoblog.bsky.social I have a starfish that I am struggling to identify. Could you please help? It is a super common sea star that is sold all over the place, and the only common name I could find is "White Finger Starfish", or "White Pencil Starfish", but no scientific name I could find.

A Steamed hams meme. Two panels.First panel has Superintendent Chalmers looking forward and holding a hamburger to show it has been grilled, but a drawing of a Seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) has been edited in, so it sort of looks like he is holding it. The eight arms of the octopus are clearly visible. Subtitles read "Yes, and you're called the seven-arm octopus despite the fact that you obviously have eight?" Second panel has the shot from behind and to right of Superintendent Chalmers, with Principal Skinner visible from across the table. A photo of a Seven-armed octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) has been edited over Skinner's head. The octopus is pink and gelatinous. The drawing of the octopus from the first panel is edited to look like it is Chalmer's hand. The subtitles say "Ye- you know, the- one thing I should-" as Skinner is stammering for an answer.

A "They don't know meme." A basic black and white ms paint drawing depicts a man wearing a party hat and holding a drink standing in the corner at a party, while he watches four other people dancing and enjoying themselves. He has a slightly tired and bored expression, and text next him to says "They don't know there are millions of giant squid in the ocean"

Because giant squid (Architeuthis dux) in the deep sea and humans do not, we don't interact with them much, leading some to believe that they are rare.

However, the estimates for the total giant squid population are in the millions, with some of the higher estimates being over a hundred million.
