Yesterday, the House passed a ban on social media accounts for kids under 14. I support the intent — but I voted “No” because the legislation didn’t include best practices for data privacy or data minimization. It would enable Big Tech to retain your driver’s license and biometric data indefinitely.

10 (Not So) Hidden Dangers of Age Verification It’s nearly the end of 2025, and half of the US and the UK now require you to upload your ID or scan your face to watch “sexual content.” A handful of states and Australia now have various requirements to verify your age before you can create a social media account.Age-verification laws may sound...

Should've said "you all" (primary doesn't even include all Cambridge residents).

It would be better, neither Carney nor Sheinbaum led a genocide.

Thank you @electerika.bsky.social !

Also Rep Decker voted yes for the bad bill, in case you needed another reason to vote for @evanforcambridge.bsky.social

Primary is September 1st! Depending where you are in Cambridge there are House Rep primary, or State Senator, or both.

Pretty sure Odd Lots hosts have been preceding some interviews at least with comments about the the awful human impacts (and bringing this up in post-interview summaries). But they're somewhat abnormal, e.g. will just as happily interview an interesting socialist economist as a hedge fund manager.

The book "Boston's Cycling Crazy, 1880-1900" has a lot of material on race and gender, I believe. But I admit haven't actually read it yet, just have a copy on my desk.

Thanks for voting no. What bill number is it?

Incredibly, the social media ban bill being voted on in the Massachusetts legislature is even worse and more draconian than many similar bills that have passed in red states.

It contains “parental surveillance” measures so controversial they were removed from KOSA

unworkable & unconstitutional

This will require _adults_ to verify their identity before using social media. Where their IDs can then be stolen by incompetent vendors, or shared with Feds, or used for privacy-violating ad targeting.

Northwestern DA’s office spent $12,000 to avoid adopting police transparency policy DA David Sullivan rejected settlement that would’ve saved taxpayers $12,000 in legal fees if he published police misconduct records online

NEW: After winning a public records lawsuit, I offered to waive more than $12,000 in legal fees if Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan’s office would adopt a policy of posting police misconduct records on its website.

Sullivan’s office rejected the offer.

I think the whole concept of age verification just isn't workable if there's going to be any privacy.

Everybody having to give government ID to use social media sites is a terrible idea:

1. Much more likely Trump regime gets access to people's identity.
2. Targeted advertising.
3. Censorship of people who need privacy.
4. The companies doing this keep leaking the documents, leading to ID theft.

Park Guell is really cool design and lots of room for kid to run around.

All tourist locations use timed tickets.

This isn't summer so you actually have a chance to see top sites. Indoor house tours likely bad with kid cause it may be supercrowded still, so very slow. Sagrada Familia might work ok though.

You can go on group bike tours (but not sure if w/young kid).

Our University community must be free to protest without fear of silencing or discipline by BU administrators except under preexisting, content-neutral rules, applied with restraint and judgment, sensitive to context and appropriate to the educational mission of the University. Instead SJP’s experience demonstrates that BU manipulated its own rules to restrict student speech that the University considered politically risky, rather than embracing earnest student expression as an important product of the University’s educational purposes.

A good locksmith will know someone, even if they can't do it themselves. E.g. I think it was Carlmont Lock who knew someone who could fix a 1870s door.

(I like to imagine there's an ancient locksmith witch, deep in the New England woods, as the ultimate fallback in this chain of expertise.)

🎉 Big news for MA renters: As of Aug. 1, 2025, you only pay a broker’s fee if they represents you. If they work for the landlord, the landlord pays. 💰
