I got tired of Substack platforming Nazis, white supremacists, and convicted rapists, so I made a browser extension.
Kill Yr Substack intercepts every Substack link and redirects it to `archive.is`. They never see your traffic. You still get to read the thing tho.

I've officially shipped We Spam Econo. It's got a 64k+ term comment blocklist in a custom table, which is 83x faster than #WordPress core's default implementation.
Pair it with Simple Cloudflare Turnstile and Akismet starts to look optional. 😉

It takes about 1.3ms (on average) to check a comment with We Spam Econo versus 108ms using #WordPress core functionality.
I thought I'd written my benchmarking script wrong when I got those results, but it's really that much quicker. 😅
I'll have it up on GitHub soon.
I forked the Comment Blacklist Manager plugin for #WordPress and the performance gains are fucking bonkers.
We Spam Econo moves 64k+ spam terms from Grant Hutchinson's blocklist into a custom table (instead of using the `disallowed_keys` array in `wp_options`) and now it's 83x faster!

I’m excited that the NBA is working on a Las Vegas expansion team. We’ll finally be able to smoke inside the arena during a game.
Speaking of leads… If your #WordPress site is looking a bit long in the tooth, I've been doing this for 20+ years and I'm really damn good at it. Hit me up!
Gmail inbox showing a plethora of LinkedIn Job Alerts emails from the past week after none for 243 days.
Turned off my "Open To Work" badge on #LinkedIn because someone convinced me that it was costing me consulting leads.
What was LinkedIn's response? Flooding my inbox with job alerts. A whole mess of them. Every single day. They only want you when you're not looking, I guess.
Spending my Saturday making bootleg #Heathcliff comics. As one does.
Managed to cut ~26KB out of a web font I use (the variable version of Atkinson Hyperlegible Next) through subsetting to just English + proper quotes and dashes. 💪
Shout out to that one friend who sends you the kind of reels that keep your Instagram algorithm *really* fucked up.

If you’ve got anything to spare, head over to bakoburrito.org and give what you can.
Every dollar goes directly to keeping people fed, warm, and cared for. This work means a lot to me.
Thanks for considering it. ♥️
Every Sunday, rain or shine, Bakersfield Burrito Project makes ~100 meals and hands out essentials. They manage to do a helluva lot with not very much.
It’s all mutual aid. Neighbors helping neighbors, no strings attached.
There’s just something about being there, helping the folks in our community who need a hand. Especially during this cold, wet, foggy Central Valley winter.
It’s been brutal on our unhoused neighbors.
I’ve been back on Sundays with the project for the past month: prepping meals, packing hygiene kits, handing out coats, distributing meals.
After a few years of just maintaining the website from the sidelines, being in it again has honestly been really meaningful.
So, I turn 48 today. 😅
And like I do every February, I’m going to ask y’all to donate to the Bakersfield Burrito Project instead of sending me birthday wishes or whatever.
An Instagram post from the account @bulgaria: The image features a large man with very short hair and a beard smiling in front of a Bulgarian flag. The text on the image reads: "Learn Cyber bullying in Bulgarian online in 4 weeks."
I’ve heard that Bulgarian is a really beautiful language to be cyber bullied in.
The WHAT system as a "new tab" page. It is yellow text on a black background. There are three lists: * What I Am Becoming * Someone who is more present and mindful * Someone who lives his values * What I Am Building * A way for me to be accountable to myself * Bakersfield's Anti-Capitalist Computer Club * A boutique WordPress consultancy * What I Am Learning * How to set and maintain personal boundaries * How to actually box * How to meditate
Un preview:
Lowkey obsessed with the WHAT system from @joanwestenberg.com's "A Metabolic Workspace" post.
In fact, I love it so much I built a quick and dirty web app for it. Now it lives on my new tab page, staring me down all day long.

There’s also free haircuts, mending from my friend Erica, and a whole lot of 100% free stuff looking for a new home.

After decades of being a hoodie guy, I finally caved and grabbed a couple crewneck sweatshirts.
They’re great. I mean, of course they are. Except I keep reflexively jamming my hands into pockets that don’t exist.
The learning curve on this is genuinely embarrassing. 🙃
Watched the Marc Maron documentary last night at 2X. Out of respect for the podcast.
We're starting an Anti-Capitalist Computer Club in #Bakersfield. If you're nearby, sign up for updates at the bottom of the page. If you're not nearby, take a look at what we're doing consider and making your own version.

A Threads post from Garry Tan: "We should have more billionaires. Maximize abundance. Support entrepreneurship. We should be prosperity-maxxing." In an attached photo, Garry is pointing to the text on his blue sweatshirt. The shirt's text is done in the Mamdani mayoral campaign style and says: "WE SHOULD HAVE MORE BILLIONAIRES".
You ever see something *so stupid* that happened *months ago* but you can't let it go until you do something about it? Well…

Turns out I did say that. With my chest.
A painting of a public execution by guillotine during the French Revolution, with a large crowd gathered to watch.
Let us not forget what an army of frogs is capable of.
Things I don’t feel bad lying about: telling the door-to-door solar salesman that we don’t own our house (we do) so they’ll go away.
