"Pining for the seaside as the summer's nearly done, I could spend forever soaking up that lazy sun..."

2000 Great Songs #1307: At The Sea. Irish baroque pop band Pugwash have a ska party at the circus and load it up with whistles & delirious pop hooks, landing on the great lost XTC song (with some actual XTC assistance).
"And I waited 'til I knew every little thing about you, let my heart adore the warmth radiating all around you..."
2000 Great Songs #1306: The Ocean In-Between. While Matthew Sweet didn't always match the power-pop highs of his amazing 90s run, he could still craft perfect little gems, like this one off a 2003 Japan-only release. Earworm choruses rule!
Some really wonderful and sometimes disturbing music in the catalog of the West Coast Pop Art... and related spin-off projects. It's a shame so much (like the last two WCPAEB albums) is out-of-print and doesn't stream, making it tough to evangelize. Such a messed-up back-story to the band.
"How come you don't act more amorous?..."
2000 Great Songs #1305: Rusty Red Armour. I'm not a big Robert Palmer fan, but his work with Vinegar Joe before going solo was kinda fun, sounding here like a particularly funky bar band tearing up the joint down the block.
"I could blame it on the tune that was playing at the bar, I could blame it on the proof of the alcohol..." youtu.be/NVkuymoKjsY?...
1000 Great Songs #1304: All My Fault. I'm wary of including new songs that haven't stood the test of time on the list; but I've listened to this catchy countrified pop gem by Fantastic Cat repeatedly for 2 years, so taking a leap of faith.
"Came from the east, like the sun, but with tired engine..."
2000 Great Songs #1303: Regina. Like a lot of otherwise great Sugarcubes songs, that one dude is grating as hell, but once Bjork takes the mic all is forgiven.
"Don't creep up behind me, you know where to find me, I'm always around..."
2000 Great Songs #1302: City Kids. Unexpectedly catchy 70s track from the Pink Fairies (and later Motorhead), somewhere between heavy metal and proto-punk, but sweetened with just a dollop of a pop hook.
Good god, this is so wrong. Thanks!
"So we crashed the gate doing 98, I says let them truckers roll, 10-4..."
2000 Great Songs #1301: Convoy. I assume all of us were first turned on to the joys of pop radio by a 70s faux-country novelty song about truckers and CB radios? Right?
Now that we've closed out the 1200s, here's a playlist for songs #1201-1300:
All treble.
"You wanna party with the lights on, c'mon, I like the dark..."
2000 Great Songs #1300: You're No Rock n' Roll Run. Wow, 1300 days doing this... and we land on @sleater-kinney.bsky.social greeting the new millennium with just about the closest they'd come to writing a pop song. Even an MTV-ready video, if that were still a thing.
Monday dinner with the Reivers.
I really like the Smithereens cover... faithful to the original but more muscular delivery.
Willow the Cat has suggested we move a little further down the Psโฆ
Is there a better way to kick off the week than with Silent Kid? Buffy the Cat says no!
I love a lot of Georgeโs songs, but his lyrics often sound like they were scribbled on a cocktail napkin after a couple bong hits and then stretched out to fill 3-4 minutes.
"Got to pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues..."
2000 Great Songs #1299: It Don't Come Easy. The other great Ringo Starr single co-written by George Harrison, some tuneful jangle that captures a smooth early 70s vibe while checking in as a catchy proto-power-pop sing-along banger.
New-Ish Releases! Finally took the time to write up some of what I've been listening to, including The Paranoid Style, Ratboys, Fantastic Cat, Lolly Lee, and Wet Tuna, plus a must-own 80s compilation.
Seems like one of those classic Beatles/Uncle Tupelo/Breeders situations where you've got a solid songwriter getting a few token contributions but needs to go out and start their own band.
