40% of Europe's electricity distribution grid is already over 40 years old: older than floppy disks, MP3s & DVDs. To connect households and businesses to the benefits of renewables and clean flexibility, it needs a serious upgrade.
Our new report sets out how 👇

Important thread here on the possibility of scrapping ECO. I would add that when ECO was cut in 2013, 10,000 people lost their jobs. That's more than 3 times as many than Scunthorpe steel works and a whopping 20 times more than Grangemouth oil refinery
Calling all researchers & comms agencies!
@beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social has 2 tenders to shine a light on local electricity grid operators🕵️♀️ beyondfossilfuels.org/about-us/wor...
1️⃣ Struggling for connection: stories of unequal access
2️⃣ The costs of grid connection delays: Quantifying the problem
🚨New polling across 🇮🇪, 🇬🇧, 🇪🇸, 🇨🇭, 🇩🇪 finds:
👉 76% of people believe new data centres should be powered with renewable energy.
👉73% want governments to set clear criteria for energy distribution.
Renewables, transparency, & fairness are key for data centres.

Electricity grid upgrades are central to Europe's future energy security and competitiveness.
To achieve this, it needs to:
1️⃣ Give national regulators a statutory mandate for the energy transition.
2️⃣ Create independent system operators and planners (ISOPs) to oversee grid planning in the public

Important new legal analysis for @umwelthilfe.bsky.social concludes that the German government's planned 20GW gas plants is incompatible with EU state aid law ⛔
The Commission must scrutinise this costly fossil hand-out, which would add billions to energy bills. www.handelsblatt.com/politik/deut...
⚡ Europe’s clean energy transition can only move as fast as its electricity grids.
But outdated regulation and limited oversight are slowing things down. RAP and @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social propose two urgent reforms for national governments to make grids fit for the energy transition.👇
NEW | Surging wind and solar power helped make electricity in Spain CHEAPER than in most European countries.
📈 As wind and solar grows…
📉 …The influence of costly fossil fuels on the electricity price shrinks

This is good messaging and we know from the social science that — if it breaks through — it actually hurts far-right parties like Reform.
Correct & strategic on multiple dimensions. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
👏 @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social for exposing the gas rip-off! Gas was just 30% of UK power last year but glas plants set prices 97% of the time.
That's how 2 plants made £18m in 3 hrs last winter.
Time to stop rigging energy in favour of fossil fuels!

In 🇬🇧, 77 long duration storage schemes, totalling 28.7GW, have been identified for a programme to use energy smartly & support energy resilience.
Alongside renewables & flexible energy use, this could go a long way towards displacing UK's 37GW gas plant fleet🔋

The Nottinghamshire gas plant they climbed is owned by German energy giant RWE - who has raked in over £1BN of 'capacity market' gas plant contracts, paid for via British energy bills.
RWE is now lobbying for similar mechanisms to be set up in Germany..

Amazing work @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social exposing the role that expensive gas plays in setting electricity prices & pushing up bills 👏
“We’re all being ripped off by greedy gas companies & it’s the poorest in society that bear the brunt of sky-high prices.”

🆕 New research reveals: Britain is a nation of clean-energy enthusiasts
According to Climate Outreach's Britain Talks Climate & Nature 2025 report, renewables already power over half of the UK’s electricity, and more than 85% of people support expanding this progress.

New analysis from @cmmonwealth.bsky.social shows nearly 1/4 of the average UK energy bill in 2024 went to company profits, not reinvestment.
Not only that, shareholders of 🇬🇧's privatised energy companies got at least £70.7bn in dividend payouts from 2010 - 2025.

Good to see journalists critically pursue the approach of German Economics Minister, who is twisting facts to slow down the clean energy transition.
"Reiche's focus on gas plants seems out of date. New gas plants would have to be massively subsidized."

In the US, capacity auction prices - paid via costs passed on to consumers by utilities - are set to soar off the back of rocketing energy demand from data centres.
Hardly seems fair that household energy bills will be used to help line the pockets of tech giants.

Love this video from @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social on the Great Gas Rip-Off!
Earlier this year, @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social Fossil Gas Freeloaders league table highlighted Britain as one of the biggest sources of gas plant subsidies in Europe 🤑
beyondfossilfuels.org/2025/06/26/f...
How are gas companies getting away with this??
Ultimately, we all want the same thing: cheaper electricity that doesn’t damage our air or the health of our children and communities.
We have the solutions. Now we just need action. Sign the petition to stop the Great Gas Rip-Off --> act.gp/4mcKPAt
Let's be clear: The flood of hatred sloshing across Britain right now is 100% a product of the political and media elite scapegoating minorities for the harms that those elites have visited upon the country.
The German Federal Network Agency has published shaky modelling overlooking clean flexibility to conclude 🇩🇪 needs 22-36GW of new gas plants🤯
Experts note how farcical it is to overlook storage potential, when 500GW storage projects are queuing to connect to the grid

New @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social @adambell.bsky.social research finds removing gas plants from the market could reduce household energy bills £1.7bn/ year, & by £3.3bn for businesses.
Crazy as Poland & Germany look to massively increase dependence on gas power..

1/3 🚩Worrying news: Data centre developers in the UK are asking about linking directly to fossil gas pipelines. 🚩
Turning to fossil gas to power new data centres would undermine the UK’s Clean Power Act and drive up both emissions and electricity bills.

I am once again saying that clean energy is inherently cheap, and the reason we don't benefit from that is because the energy market doesn't let us. Great stuff here from my colleague @chrisgalpin.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...
There is huge potential here for energy bill savings - but only if the UK acts on the recommendations.
Heat pumps do come with a higher up-front cost - but maximising running cost savings unlocks more options to finance those upfront costs and deliver long-term savings
NEW @e3g.bsky.social analysis - Heat pumps have potential to *halve* UK heating bills.
But policies need to change if these savings are to be accessible to the mass market 🔌💡

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK would allow a fossil fuel company owned by a Donald Trump donor to open up a huge fracking site in Greater Lincolnshire
