Group of students in a lecture hall with a banner urging action against proposed NSF funding cuts by SPSP.
The proposed FY2027 budget calls for eliminating NSF's SBE Directorate, which funds 63% of U.S. academic research in social + psychological sciences.
SPSP has put together a member action guide with three steps you can take to help advocate for our field.

Gender conformity starts young – and boys and girls fall in line in different ways
Children learn what it means to be a woman or a man early on. How they respond to threats to how well they conform to gender stereotypes changes with age.
Great article from @avial.bsky.social and @adamstanaland.bsky.social about how boys are motivated to avoid femininity by age 5. Their results show that the problematic trend that "masculine" things are cool for everyone but "feminine" things are only for girls/women starts early.

Anti-Intellectualism Has a Hidden Target
Though it’s increasingly not so hidden anymore
Take, for instance, fields long dominated by women —gender studies & the humanities & social sciences, the disciplines most frequently written off as ‘useless’, or of ‘no value to society’. Unsurprisingly, these are now among the most aggressively targeted.

we made covid restrictions, not covid, the enemy, success was defined as 'getting back to normal'
& in doing so, we missed the opportunity to normalise very lost cost behaviours that would, cumulatively, save a lot of lives

A bar graph showing that Executives have trended mostly Republican (65-70%) since at least 2008.
Woke professors should fight back on #highered attacks by demanding "viewpoint diversity" among American CEOs.

I feel this way about pretty much all vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. You shouldn't be allowed to dump cyanide into municipal drinking water and you shouldn't be allowed to recreationally spread viruses around shared public spaces.

F.D.A. Refuses to Review Moderna Flu Vaccine
This is troubling for multiple reasons, but one big one is companies won’t want to invest in R&D and clinical trials if they don’t think they can get a fair regulatory review—which is at the end of a long and extremely expensive process.

New research finds that debunking disinformation works better than prebunking when there is a time delay. Correcting false claims after people encounter them reduced trust in disinformation for at least two weeks across multiple topics.

Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.
The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

reddit post from a presumably young person who watched sex and the city and couldn’t get over how much people smoked indoors. “wouldn’t everything smell bad?” they asked
this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

New paper in PSPB on the benefits of giving positive feedback to students, especially from underrepresented groups. Although not the norm in STEM, giving positive feedback boosts self-efficacy and belonging, which increases STEM performance, attitudes, interest

Remembering when I posted this photo from Glasgow and a guy’s daughter, sheltering from a hurricane in Florida, saw it and drew this amazing sketch to pass the time.
My question is, why invest in AI when we have immensely talented humans all around us more in need of investment?

"Prestige bias" is one of the strongest forms of bias in academia.
Reviewers rank paper submissions from top-20 institutions and non-students higher, but this goes away with blinded reviews.

Graphic that shows that among republicans, support for school vaccine requirements has dropped from 79% in 2016 to 52% in October 2025.
Wanna see a visual on the result of the Republican attack on public health?
I’ve got you covered. This is from Pew Research Center’s most recent survey, showing a 27% drop in Republican support for school vaccine requirements from 2016-2025.

I should mention this again: Worldbuilders Market worldbuildersmarket.com/search?q=mar... has Murderbot and Sanctuary Moon merchandise where the proceeds go to charity. At this point as far as I know there is no other licensed official merchandise.

This is a correct framework.
Generally, environmental factors linked with increased autism risk occur in late pregnancy and include immune response to illness. (But not postnatal, only prenatal)
A powerful protection for that is to be vaccinated.

I am begging Canadians to understand that Canada Post, like public transit, should not be a business - it's a service.
Canada Post is a lifeline for rural, remote and Northern communities and overall, we need to re-evaluate why people think they "need" random shit delivered ASAP.
