When you factor in unpaid travel time/sleep in time in the social care sector, all workers in the sector are subsidising the sector. They are subsidising with their labour a core part of our economic and social infrastructure.

HO case also presupposes the govts policies and plans to raise pay in the social care sector aren’t happening or won’t succeed. If so, how will they improve recruitment and retention from domestic workforce.

A massive thank you to @neilduncanjordan.bsky.social and @unison.org.uk for collaborating with us to host an event for MPs to hear directly from migrant workers set to be affected by the settlement proposals.

As @stevewitherdenmp.bsky.social said: MPs are waking up to the magnitude of these plans!

‘Migrant care workers need our support – from racism and an unfair visa system’ By Christina McAnea, UNISON The climate of fear facing migrant care staff is escalating. Last week’s shock announcement on indefinite leave to remain has only heightened their sense of insecurity.…

I came to the UK as a child refugee and benefited from the safety and sanctuary from persecution that led me to flee my home. This saved my life. It is agonising to think of this hand of compassion and kindness being withdrawn.

The "something for nothing" myth How should we value people's contribution to the country?

"There is no universe in which Sam Ashworth-Hayes – or any of Britain’s array of overpaid columnists, commentators and ideological wonks – is more valuable to this country than a care worker"

Joint statement on anti-migrant rhetoric – Keeping our communities safe from racism
Our health and social care sector is built on the hard work and rich diversity of its workforce. Many
of our colleagues, especially those from international backgrounds or perceived as ethnically distinct from the majority population, are facing a sustained campaign of anti-migrant rhetoric. The escalating use of hostile language allows some political parties to exploit fear and promote division and emboldens those in society who seek to intimidate. This rhetoric also comes at a time when the rights of those who live and work in the UK to continue to make the UK their home are being openly questioned, including tens of thousands of people working within the health and social care sector. People are unsettled and frightened, with some directly experiencing hate and violence at work and within their communities.
In the face of this blatant scapegoating of migrant communities, we stand united in our commitment to uphold the values of dignity, respect and equality for all individuals. As leading trade unions and professional associations within the UK, representing workers within the health and social care sector, we reject any form of discrimination and oppose all forms of racism and xenophobia.
Together we will continue to advocate for policies that promote inclusion, protect human rights, and foster a culture of empathy and understanding. We call on the media, and politicians to stop spreading misinformation for political gain and engage in evidence-based discourse around immigration.
The health and social care sector in the UK has always been reliant on the commitment and expertise of its international workforce. Figures from NHS England and Skills for Care show that in England, 776,000 workers – around a quarter of the total workforce of just over 3 million – are non-British nationals.

Have written up some of my thoughts about the increasingly sinister use of 'non-UK born' and 'white British' in the British press. The obsession with 'white British' citizens over other British citizens harms all of us and needs to be called out.

We are in such a midnight moment right now, just as that which was about to engulf Granada and Lorca. But that murmur of beauty, of humanity and our connection to the whole world will always exist and endure.

What a powerful way to demonstrate that you can have a deep commitment to a place, a culture, a history and a language and use that connection to connect to the whole world and to all humanity. To see differences as complementary, a richer harmony.

like Granada, which has a name in the universe and a crown of glory….a place of historical and poetic frontiers, and a murmur of pure beauty”

Came across a wonderful quote by Lorca about the journal he was setting up, the aim of which would be “A journal about Granada for those outside it, that takes the global pulse in order to distinguish its own unique heartbeat; a happy, lively, anti-localist, anti-provincial journal of the world..

Agency care staff ‘charged £10k for free work visas’ A BBC investigation hears claims overseas workers are mistreated and threatened with deportation.

Agency care staff ‘charged £10k for free work visas’ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We hear about this kind of exploitation all too often. A recent UNISON survey of more than 3,000 migrants working in the care sector found almost a quarter had paid illegal visa fees.

One thing that is irksome about the “actually the island of strangers is about social isolation” line is okay, how does doubling the permanent residency requirement *help* with this?
