Usually you don't get to say goodbye to someone. Albeit unintentionally, with that last postcard I can find a lot of comfort in having had a fitting final 'meeting' with someone dear to me. If you get the chance, please send cards. Maybe a small gesture, but it can mean everything to the recipient.
Two days later, sunday evening, I get a call telling me she has passed away. Found in her room, likely asphyxiation after a seizure. The funeral was yesterday. Luckily I've got a great support system around me who've helped me take my mind of it all, though that can only do so much in the end. (5/6)
After a small conversation we went on with our day. The next morning I text her asking if she's free that night, a mutual's band would be playing in a local bar. She never responded or read the message. I didn't pay it too much attention. You can't always expect same-day replies, I thought. (4/6)
I almost forgot about it too, but quickly wrote some small, cute texts (personalized, of course) on the cards during lunch and put them in a post box a few hours before my plane departed. Come the following thursday, I get a text from her thanking me for the cute card and how it made her happy (3/6)
There I saw some postcards on display and thought to myself "you know what, let's end this one-way traffic" and I bought a few with the intention of sending them to close family and one to her. Nothing special, just postcards with pictures of Irish sheep and donkeys pulling funny faces. (2/6)
One of my friends who I'm very close with always loved sending cards. For christmas, birthdays, achievements, anything. She often personalized them too. I always let her know I was thankful for those cards but never actually sent one back. Two weeks ago I went on a fun weekend trip to Ireland. (1/6)
