The thorax pattern of a moth, segmented by red lines edited into the photo. It starts with two black oval patches with pale blue highlights (the eyes). The grey background with yellow bits of setae is supposed to resemble the bee’s grey thorax and yellow setae. The skull-like pattern possibly resembles the abdomen and tufts of yellow setae at the rear end of the bee’s thorax.

Cunning little creatures, Acherontia truly are.
It is well-known they mimic the queen bee’s pheromones, also wing vibrations by squeaking. What is lesser known however, is that the thorax is supposed to visually resemble a bee! Took me a while, but best represented by this A. lachesis I collected.
