Austin Ainge was asked about his philosophy on tanking, manipulating minutes to improve lottery odds, etc. His answer: "You won't see that this year."

Right off the bat, Ryan Smith says that Austin Ainge will have final say and giving recommendations to Smith. So, that's a lot more clear than the last time the Jazz hired an Ainge

No. I don’t want Tre Johnson, Kon Knueppel, Jeremiah Fears, Derik Queen, OR Egor Demin. They don’t play ANY defense. Trade up for VJ Edgecombe or trade down for Noa Essengue or Nique Clifford and start stockpiling two-way players. I’m tired of watching Utah get cooked on defense.

My question: With Utah likely drafting a non-defender again now that Flagg and Edgecombe of the board, how does Utah start building their defensive identity? Bring the worst defensive team in the league is NOT fun.

Utah has Markannen, Hendricks, and John Collins, but ZERO perimeter defense. Utah has got to get away from drafting BPA when there’s defenders on the board. They missed on Desmond Bane, Ryan Dunn, Jaden McDaniels, and gave away Nickiel Alexander-Walker for nothing. The culture HAS to change.

These playoffs have demonstrated how important the need for solid perimeter defenders and bigs who can shoot. Golden State, OKC, NYK, Boston, and Minnesota’s rosters all have defenders across the board. Denver, OKC, Minnesota, NYK, Boston, and Indiana all have great shooting bigs. CLE is the outlier

You’ll never make yourself small enough for people who don’t actually love you. So be unhinged, stick to your needs, deeply love the things you love. It doesn’t need to make sense to anyone and if you’re too much, they aren’t the ones. A small circle who loves you is gold.
