I totally wanted to add "especially now" to the dedication, but I knew 10 years from now that might be a head-scratcher. But especially now, you know what I mean.
It's not out yet, but my next picture book is dedicated to school and public #librarians... which maybe I should have said library workers. Happy National Library Workers Day!
[In my mind, you are all librarians. ๐]
Hopefully this is getting to people who need to read it. We have very effective vaccines and when our vaccination rates were high, it allowed us to collectively forget how devastating these disease are until anti-vaxxer & wellness grifters convinced people to not vaccinate their children...

I am so very gifted at clunky writing and typos. If you see anything from me that is reasonably polished that is because of the efforts and attention of other people including my crit group, other kidlit colleagues, and editors. ๐๐ฆ

One brave little heat pump made it through the night with the furnace offline. April, sure, it's warmer... and then it snowed yesterday and went down to 24 degrees last night.
I feel like there was more attention to this awhile ago and then it got buried by a lot of other concentration of power issues...
It's normal in libraries to see a small number of book challenges by parents & patrons who have concerns about content. Today, however, 92% come from organized groups, including officials and dark money groups like Citizens for a New LA. It's time we reclaim our libraries for the people they serve.
It's just as enraging as the gmo-seed contracts
I used to teach a service-learning class and both learning about how agribusiness works and then learning from a local 9th gen farm family (and volunteering for the day) was an eye opener for students. I miss that class. Shout out to Tide Mill!

Corporate control. Remember all those people going on about how essential competition is in the marketplace and completely looking the other way for the last 40 years instead of enforcing US anti-trust laws and updating them for the platform era?
If you don't know about this, it's a good example of how corporations trap farmers in never-ending debt and submission by dictating all the terms. It shouldn't be legal.
The first panel shows a crow with the title "How to live a good life". The second panel shows a crow cawing at itself in the mirror with the subheading "Make friends". The next panel says "Explore" and shows a crow looking into a commercial waste bin. The next says "Try new things" with a crow eating something vile. The next one says "Be curious" and shows the crow grabbing a hissing cat's tail". The final frame says "Get a hobby" and shows the crow looking closely at a book of matches.

Any time a brand become the noun or verb for the thing... (google something, read my substack) It's a red flag. It's a freaking newsletter, except there are sites for newsletters that don't trap and force feed your subscribers.
the younger one used to inherit the hand-me-downs, but now they are the same size...
Solidarity with all the parents realizing that their kids have outgrown all their summer clothes. Holy crap. We need a better local swap.
People considering ditching substack, this might be of interest.
PS: ditch substack
It you have the time and the interest, if someone offers that type of experience, take them up on it... it's a type of learning and mentorship. But it isn't always obvious or they expect you to know 2/
In my classes, I tell all my students "I'm working on this paper or this talk. If anyone would like to work on it with me, let me know" because when I was in undergrad I was so anxious and I didn't understand what I was being invited to (in that case, to work in a professor's lab.) 1/ #AutChat
