Fostering a love of reading and curiosity is at the heart of education. Reading diverse books develops critical thinking, belonging, and a passion for learning.
Censoring school library books is unacceptable.
An urgent motion to fight censorship and defend librarians was passed at #NEU2026.
Because we need to keep a steely eye on what is happening there…to understand what is happening here…

“HR 7661, if passed, will compel nationwide book censorship. It confuses obscenity with identity& stigmatizes vulnerable young people, particularly trans children&teens, based on who they are” Coalition sign statement opposing House Resolution 7661.

Is children’s fiction in danger of becoming a fast food diet..?
“Books become merely a product for consumption, a written-to-order consumable.A paint-by-numbers literary commodity…They shouldn’t just please us. That leads to not being able to handle disagreements, different world views..”

Yes! The @ibbyuk.bsky.social list is out!
11 books which “show a wide range of disabilities and backgrounds and provide authentic, respectful representations and reflect the growing numbers of ‘own voice’ and ‘lived experience’ books.”

Cover graphic for instagram carousel. Teal background with orange/pink wavy swirls in corners.. Against this in an inside book picture from Eli's Uncles, illustrated by Rashin Kheiriyeh. This shows a man with brown skin in a chef's hat, wearing an orange chef jacket. He has a long moustache pointing upwards and a very long white beard which swirls around. In his right arm, he holds a small brown-skinned sleeping child who wears a black and white horizontal striped top with an orange neckerchief and black trousers. Above the image, it reads, "Aunties & Uncles".
Hey #KidLitUK folks! We think aunties, uncles, piblings are way too scarce in children’s picture books. Head on over to our Insta grid (cover image below) to see some of the people fixing that!
I wrote Queerly Autistic as the book I desperately wish I'd had as a young queer autistic person.
I know what it was like trying to figure myself out without access to this sort of information, and how vulnerable that made me.
Knowledge is empowerment - and safety.
