Down in Florida, my first beach read was a novel called The Death and Life of August Sweeney by Sam Ashworth. Telling the story of an erstwhile Food Network star who wants to be treated in death like the animals he cooked on TV—that is, cut up and used from nose to tail—the book is ravenous, visceral, tender, humane, and just the right amount of perverse. An example of the meat zeitgeist I was talking about the other week, it’s the sort of work that I think readers will gravitate toward more and more in the next couple of years. It deserves to be far more famous than it is. Readers long to rediscover their own bodies, their insides, and have other people discover them, too.
There's very simply no one in in the Literary Industry whom I listen to more, or read more eagerly, than @annasplat.bsky.social. To have her, of all people, write this--it means *everything.*

I started this series, Fiction Sandwich, over at my Writing Sandwich Substack to explore my obsession with fiction craft, theory, history, challenges, and the (often seemingly impossible, sometimes even ghostly) journey of writing a novel.
