Unmasking the Sea Star Killer After a decade of carnage, we finally know what’s devastating sea stars along North America’s West Coast. Does that mean scientists can save them?

"To raise sunflower stars in captivity and release them to the Pacific, however, scientists must first learn how to keep stars from dying. And for that, they must know what’s killing them in the first place."

Very proud of how well the Elbows Up Canada Rally on Sunday went. OPP says there were 1000 people there at one point! Ready to get going on organizing the next one 💪 #ElbowsUpCanada

A black horse in crossties standing in a stable.

The horse I ride is named Whiopa, and I can’t figure out the origins of such a name. Anyone here know if Whiopa is a name, a place, a word? Maybe a different spelling? The search engines haven’t been helpful.

She’s a registered Canadian Horse, if that is helpful.

I feel so privileged to get such clear night skies out where I live. I went for a post-sunset snowshoe in the dark wood nearby, and while a headlamp was necessary to see the trail, I couldn’t help but turn and off and let me know yes adjust to the light of the night

This is an astonishing statistic, which most people don’t appreciate.

When we phase out fossil fuels, we can eliminate 40% of international shipping along with it.

Did you know... there are freshwater jellyfish?

I find them in many lakes I study. Too small to sting us, they live as polyps on the bottom, producing medusae ("jellyfish") when conditions are right. My photos aren't great, so enjoy this one by Jan Hamrsky, www.lifeinfreshwater.net.

So seeing both these networks working together 4 years later really chokes me up. Very proud of the continuing work of the international APECS network and the exponential growth of the global ECOP network!! 2/2

When I started ECOP Canada (ECOP=Early Career Ocean Professionals), the first people we spoke to was the Canadian APECS team, to ask about what makes a good early-career professional network. The reason for this is I gained a lot of professional development thru APECS as a Polar Professional. 1/2

I’ve joined the local volunteer Search and Rescue group, and we had a month long training program before being cleared for duty. Honestly, a lot of fun! We completed a full simulation last Saturday and found our missing hunter! 🌲👷‍♀️
